I can't even begin to postulate when we might have a cure, but I think this decade we will start to see treatments, especially those borne out of noise-induced hearing loss. FX-322 and OTO-413 are the bright spots close™ on the horizon, but we still have yet to see further trial data.
One optimistic but viable possibility when they are released and shown successful (positive thinking!) then they will open up the medical community to further research and development, showing that it is possible to defeat this symptom or at the very least beat it back.
Not to mention there are groups such as the Bionics Institute possibly getting close to objectively measuring the symptom in individuals which would provide a massive boon to researchers, clinicians, and patients alike.
Sorry about the reply chain, but I think there's good chances based from what I've read that there will be improvements this decade. I know some of the older crowd have said "this hype and optimism has come and gone before", but like YOU said, technology is more advanced in the future. The 2020s are not the 1990s, etc.
