My theory is this: Overprotecton will not make it easier to get re-injured, but it may lead to TTTS (psychological reaction towards sounds that causes pain), because you've been telling your brain to fear all sounds for weeks and months. This you can override with sound-exposure. With the actual damage you cannot. That will get worse with sound-exposure.
@danielthor I agree that it's not any easier to be re-injured in terms of more structural damage to the inner ear. I personally believe a sensitivity can develop in the central auditory system, independent of ear damage, and this can worsen both by over-protection and under-protection, as it has happened for me. If that is "hyperacusis" or not, I don't know. Nowadays I just call it "sensitivity to sound".
