Where did it snap? at the bridge or nut? Could be a sharp spot worn into either of those perhaps. Could be many other things though.

I have a lamp in the ceiling of my entrance that hangs somewhat loosely and I've been woken up a few times by the whole thing swinging down and crashing into the mirror, shattering the whole glass crown on the lamp. A ruckus and not a pleasant way to wake up. But not nearly as bad as the fire alarm last year.
