Oh yeah, I remember polytechnic classes (which included cooking, woodwork, sewing,...) from my schooldays, back when dinosaurs still walked the earth :) OMG, the horrible dishes some of us would end up producing. A bit like Neville Longbottom's potions but without the explosions :)
Leila
As far as I can tell, there isn't a big interest in scouting clubs over here either. At least none of my friends' kids have ever mentioned being in one. It's probably because there isn't really a need for such thing with the Überflussgesellschaft we live in. And the moment you say "But..." people call a naysayer.
Leila
Do you have plans for Easter? I'll check in with my dad for a day and meet up with a friend or two for a couple of hours on the the others. Maybe I'll do a bit of drawing. A friend has moved into a new place and if the final result turns out all right, I'll give it to her as a housewarming gift.
Leila
I need a bit of distraction at the moment because I'm working on a story where the main character is suffering from depression and I can tell that being in this particular frame of mind it's getting to me. So, distraction it is. Makes everything take twice as long, though, so I'm not sure if powering though wouldn't be the wiser choice :)
Christiaan
@Leila Haha, well, you learn the most from your mistakes, am I right?:) It sounds like you had a great time when you were in school.
Christiaan
I wish I had the same experience, but unfortunately I've spend 6 years in a dreadful old Catholic school where teachers were very distant to their pupils and subjects didn't demand a whole lot of creativity. I almost felt like I left prison when I got my secondary school degree:p
Christiaan
It's a shame the Überflussgesellschaft has taken root in society. But there's a chance that with the war going on in Ukraine, living standards here and elsewhere take a dive and thus we may need to be more savvy with our finances and make some smart choices to stay afloat.
Christiaan
Well, I do not, actually. I had a busy weak with my birthday and all (13th of April) and I'm planning to rest during Easter by going to the beach. The weather is quite nice this time around so I don't have any excuse but to go for a nice swim
Christiaan
I hope you'll enjoy your Easter with loved ones. I do think it's amazing that you have so many hobbies and talents! It's a great backup plan in case you're in need of some distraction. Do you write for a living? And do you have a particular interest in certain genres or writers ?
Leila
You are right, I was one of the lucky kids who had a great time in school. And for the longest of times I thought it to be normal for everyone. The older I got, though, the more horror stories I got to hear about school and realised how lucky I was.
Leila
For a while, I thought I might be "glorifying the past" but when we had our 30-year reunion last year, all my former classmates pretty much said the same thing, that we had strict but fair teachers and were lucky enough to all be friends.
Leila
School should be a time of friendship and learning and help turning you into somebody who's not just learned but also a good person.

I'm very sorry to hear that your experiences were so different in this regard.
Leila
As for my writing, I'd like to say I write for a living, because, as far as time and efford is concerned, I do, but I'm far from being JK Rowling :) I've written all kinds of things, from scifi to poetry. But for the last four years I've got together with other LGBT+ writers who've also decided to cater to the community.
Leila
So together as well as individually we are writing stories whose main charcters are LGBT+ instead of the mere sidekick or comical relief. The series I'm working on, for example, has an aromantic, touch-averse man for a main character.
Leila
I've been thinking of doing something similar to help creating more awareness when it comes to tinnitus, but so far I've only thought about it in abstract terms. Maybe I'll work it into one of my other stories and see how things go from there...
Leila
Have a great Easter weekend yourself, and enjoy your swim. You're thinking indoors pool, right? Because I'm getting goosebumps at the mere thought of how cold the North Sea still got to be.
Christiaan
Thanks Leila. I wasn't swimming indoors. I actually had a great time at the beach. It was 20 degrees outside and there weren't a lot of people, so it was rather quiet. Anyway, how's your Easter?
Christiaan
To the sound of it, I think it could be quite interesting if you were to write a book about your time at your old high school. I can imagine that there are many people who would like to read a book about the school they've spend so many precious years learning, making friends, etc. I can tell you that it's quite a thing around here
Christiaan
Well, it's never to late to become an internationally recognised writer. Look at someone like Charles Bukowski for instance;)
Christiaan
It's quite interesting that you've mentioned LGBT+ as a matter of interest. What makes you motivated to write for this particular community? Are there particular themes that you'd like to address?
