Learning to live with hyperacusis was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I was lucky in so far that social isolation made it possible to get away with avoiding people and most kinds of noises for months without anybody questioning it too much. As helpful as it is to talk to people in similar situations it can also be rather frightening because, more often than not, it's the severe cases that stick out.
