Tinnitus Talk Support Forum

Gabriel
Btw I am going to take a break from TT, and you should too.
It helped me last time to take a break from the website), because it helps to move on.
Starting to go out to do sport, even if I take less pleasure.
Fake it until you make it :)

@Gabriel FACE it til you make it! Remind me before you go how long you've had it and how you got it. Rooting for you!
Guywithapug
Hours here, definitely not weeks or months
SarahMLFlemmer
@Guywithapug How long have you had T and how did you get it?
Guywithapug
@SarahMLFlemmer I had sudden hearing loss in Nov 2020 from an acoustic neuroma. Tinnitus was horrifying back then but eventually baseline to a moderate hiss with reactivity. How about you?
SarahMLFlemmer
Nov. 2022. Med. induced by Accutane. Right now it's a moderate ring that sometimes can be masked, but most often not. I sure hope it lowers in volume or I "habituate" sooner than later. Looking up this Susan Shore's device and pondering if it's a dud or not. I know I'm only almost 3 months in and may be too early to say it's permanent, but it seems most people I've talked to who have taken Accutane still have it. :(
Guywithapug
Wow I just read up on accutane and it's sounds like a dangerous medication. Many different side effects including tinnitus, which should abate after stopping the medication... except that is not always the case I guess. 3 months is still early on, i would say my habituation began after a solid year, maybe a little longer. Hang in there. You're a warrior now, like us.
SarahMLFlemmer
@Guywithapug I am a girl with a weiner dog BTW! But, what I was gonna say is- I thought that with acoustic neuroma is once you take care of it the T goes away??
SarahMLFlemmer
@Guywithapug Yeah, I wish I would've took heed to warnings about Accutane, I didn't even have acne really, just a few bumps here and there, nothing major at all. I went in for scar treatment but he insisted on "acne" treatment first.
SarahMLFlemmer
@Guywithapug The T started 3 weeks after my last dose but I've talked to other people who took it and it happened afterwards too. There def. is a connection.
SarahMLFlemmer
@Guywithapug How would you describe habituation in your own words?
Guywithapug
I wish that was the case, but hearing loss is what caused the tinnitus and reactivity and well.. there's nothing thar can bring that back. I like your weiner btw ;)
GeorgeLG
The concept is neuroplasticity. Your brain rewires/reprioritizes to push the perception of T back behind other things. Threads like Back to Silence work with this mechanism. Other techniques like mindfullness, CBT, etc are similar.

@GeorgeLG did the volume lower at all? Can you say you feel like yourself again?
GeorgeLG
On the loudest days it's the same but I go for long periods of not thinking about it and it does not bother me anymore. T no longer effects my life.
SarahMLFlemmer
@GeorgeLG Great to hear it! How long have you had T again and how did you get it? Nice to meet you.
GeorgeLG
Coming up on two years for T. It was a combination of construction tools, competitive shooting and rock band. I was having problems for about 2 years but did not understand what was happening to my ears. The last straw was an electric leaf blower next to the ear with no protection. T immediately, pain over the next few weeks.
GeorgeLG
Its nice to meet you as well. Give yourself some time, the very beginning is a shock and can feel discouraging at times but you can gat a handle on this and lead a normal life. You need to come to believe that and know the power of your mind.
SarahMLFlemmer
@GeorgeLG without God as my strength and hope for eternity, I don't know I would survive just this, let alone losing a loved one to cancer and having cancer too. I have my many health ailments, but with T, there is no reprieve. I commend you, sir.
