Tinnitus Talk Support Forum

Honestly they never talked about it until I told them I had it. My brother got it from getting to close to a speaker during a concert, so hearing loss. He's fine and forgets he has it until I mention mine. My father got it from Aspirin with no hearing loss and also is the same. Forgets he has it unless reminded. I feel mine is probably harder to ignore because it seems so loud to me but we will see as time goes on

My brother also says that when he's reminded of it and focuses on it, he would rate the loudest as a 10. So the brain can tune it out for most.

Wow, thanks. I am still shocked by the "conspiracy of silence" around tinnitus and this is another example. I guess is only because they "forget about it", but still it is not 100% so you would think the would warn you about it, at least about what they knew: loud music and aspirin.

I have 3 friends that have it. I know them for over 30 years. They never mentioned it. Do not protect ears. Go to concerts. 2 guys stable. One guy has it super loud! Cuts tiles with a grinder every day. He's half deaf. No protection. Talk to him a lot. It's so loud he takes Tylenol every morning to deal with the headache…. But he lives his life like he does not have it.

I mentioned earlier, my wife knew about it because her brother has had it since childhood due to penicillin. She did mention it to me, but neither of us knew about the noise link. I forgot about her brother issue, but she remained aware and always thought about when antibiotics were prescribed, which luckily happened rarely in our family.

It is all about loudness. Starting with very mild to now catastrophic 7.5 months later I am qualified to say that, sadly.

Loudness is 10 when he focuses on it? That's so hard to believe. Some amazing case of habituation, or just some other mechanism. That I don't understand.

But that goes back to my point, "10 when he focuses on it" is bad enough he should be damn warning everyone around him about the dangers of loud noise, and especially his sister.

(I know you did not get it from noise, but my point stands).

Sorry. One more story. My moms friend has had it for 20 years. Can hear it over the TV. Takes Escitalopram for anxiety last 10 years. Anxiety not due to T. All of them have one thing in common. They have no idea that Meds or noise can make it worse. Honest. Zero research on the topic. Ignorance is bliss!!!

@4Grace. Your friends are assholes. It is like all these people hid their secret so others can get this shit as well. Same about my "friend". 30 year tinnitus, supposedly loud. Never a peep.

Always complained about his bad back. Once mentioned his hearing is getting worse, when we were discussing noise from studded tires, heck we were test driving them on two of my vehicles. Never a peep about T. Fuck him, and fuck your friends, too.

@gameover I knew to be careful with my ears because of Tinnitus. I think they're at a point where the brain eventually develops a tolerance even in the loudest settings. It just takes longer and with their many years in they just don't know any different. I was shocked when my dad said he had it. I think I started off as severe and bounce back between mild and moderate.
Mo8409
@gameover That's good that your wife never forgot! So many medications wrecked so many things.
Mo8409
@Hardwell That's an unfortunate truth. I'm starting to think I'm going to end up like my dad. Where the medication got me with no hearing loss.

@gameover people have lifes it's not their job to tell everyone they have T, maybe they want to forget about it themselves. It's just abit toxic to think people are not telling you on purpose. And frankly it might just not be as big of a deal to them as it is to you and most of us on this site.

My mother has had it loud for nearly 20 years now. She never protects her ears has loud surround sound on for tv has too use earbuds for work. And the only time it annoys her is when really tired, dehydrated, or ill. But the first couple of years it bug her alot. Time usually helps most people like the majority of sufferers, so they don't want to speak about it as when they do it reminds them of it.

@4Grace my mother is exactly the same, when i have said things like i cant use headphones or pain killers , caffeine other things like that she is shocked and says well i didn't know that, i honestly think she habituated quicker and carried on because there wasnt sites like this back then. And i honestly think this has made me worse specially depression
Utdmad89
Id probably be way better if i hadn't read every story specially the horrors.
RunningMan
I don't think you can have a 10 because tinnitus has no limits. What is a 10 to someone else might be a 2 to me. I don't bother rating it that way. But it seems like tinnitus can keep getting worse for the worst of cases.

@RunningMan @Utdmad89 i agree. I think these stories are great. They are needed since they give everyone hope. However, they should not undermine anyones suffering or make anyone feel weak because they are having a hard time while others are not …. The tip of the iceberg of my T story below.
