Tinnitus Talk Support Forum

Yep, the first months were horrible (as if catastrophic tinnitus wasn't enough). My tinnitus was reactive (could hear weird squeaky sounds when exposed to music) and bass sounds were generally quite dull. Luckily the reactive quality was gone after some time and my hearing in lower frequency sounds improved somewhat around the same time

@Christiaan Were you first scared that it was like hearing loss ? I can still hear people talking I don't have to ask what they said but when i'm like in the store the background sounds are turning very weird for me it's a weird experience. I have it now for 4 months, I am getting some hope now reading your message that it can be better

Do you mean that I was scared that I had suffered hearing loss? Well, it's a bit of a yes and no. Sure, distorted sounds made me feel like I ended up in a parallel universe where everything was out of place: enjoying music was out of the question, going to crowded places (bars, music venues) was a no-go, nobody understood what I was going through. Basically, I felt alienated by this whole experience.

But at the same time, these distorted sounds pale in comparison to catastrophic tinnitus. The relentless torture of having multiple loud sounds initially crushed my soul & my will to live in a matter of weeks. Back then, I remembered thinking that I was willing to accept everything, including sound distortions, or even total deafness, if that meant that I somehow could get rid of my tinnitus. It was really that bad.

Sorry for sharing this story. I can imagine that it may hit close to home given your similar experience. It's good to hear that at least I've given you some hope. There are also other members, like Jjflyman, who experienced lower tinnitus or less symptoms after a year of two. So don't give up hope yet:)
