Some people have it so low, they have to listen in an absolutely quiet room to notice. So it doesn't really matter if they have it or not. That's how it was with me many years back. The issue is when the tinnitus becomes louder and especially if it gets severe or catostrophic.

@RunningMan I would consider that a cure if I had T so low that I would have to strain to hear it in a quiet room but Michael Leigh claim's that's not possible
Kiyomi
I guess this is for chronic T only? As in "T can always come back" or "T never fades to zero"? What about non noise induced and non ototoxic T?
HearingHell
@MiaVIL If someone tells you their T went away, and Michael tells you they're lying, why do you choose to believe Michael?

Micheal has his own opinions and experience with mild to catastrophic tinnitus. His opinions are lived. You don't have to agree wholeheartedly.

IMHO habituation may be as close to a "cure" as some of will get. I would certainly take that over the state of mind I am in now. If you are hoping for a cure you may certainly be disappointed. I am not saying it can't happen, but it's the exception not the rule.

Those people that have to listen closely to it like me years ago didn't typically get there from worse tinnitus. I would say it's very unusual for tinnitus to improve outside of short term tinnitus. Usually people just habituate to more mild forms of tinnitus like I had a few years ago, and that's what they mean when they say they 'recovered.'
M
@HearingHell because it seems hopeless and there's not many success stories
M
@RunningMan so people who spoke to me on the phone who claim to have gone from loud, intrusive multi-toned tinnitus to mild/faint tinnitus are lying?

@MiaVIL habituation? Knowing I have T but being able to live with it, function and be closer to the person I want and need to be. Do I want to be cured? Absolutely! However I feel it is an unrealistic goal that I may never achieve. I know it's harsh but I would rather not set myself up for failure. Habituation/Acceptance is the goal. Anything more is a bonus.
RunningMan
There are always the rare few who have actual tinnitus reduction beyond short term tinnitus, but most probably just "recover" by habituation that it doesn't bother them so much, and it's likely maybe their case was more mild than they believed.

@MiaVIL I think change in tone for the better is certainly possible, especially for those that are young and/or have sudden acoustic trauma.
