    Cure for Hyperacusis??

My son has H but not T so there isn't always a correlation. You did say "in many cases" though. The opinions I trust least are the ones that say that all cases are the same thing or can be treated the same way.

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

I think it is like watching a lit fuse. I don't like that I do that. It is disconcerting to others and they look at me funny for doing it. It's like having a nervous tic.

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

No vertigo and my son has no ringing. Because of matching symptoms for the same (left) ear - the crumpling sound masking all sound above some high decibel level - I am assuming it is a genetic defect, not an infection. I am jumping to the conclusion of genetics without a lot of evidence, but...

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

Something you may find interesting since the T & H seem to overlap. My son has H but not T. Loud noises like live music and some theater movies make his left ear hear nothing but a sound like a paper bag being crumpled. He can massage around the ear and get the crumpling sound without sound. I...

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

I think that is where the DSM may have it right. I startle at abrupt sounds, sometimes even if I know they are coming. Opening a soft drink can is one. I startle even if I am opening it. I put a thumb over the tab to dampen it and lift the tab very slowly but sometimes it still opens abruptly...

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

I don't think they claimed that it accounts for all hyperacusis. They are more concerned with the nerves than the hairs, though both are involved. Who should I believe - scientists at Johns Hopkins or some guy on the internet that calls their science based theory rubbish? Hmm...

Why Certain Sounds Hurt More Than Other Sounds?

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine did a study that indicates nerve damage in cochlea is largely to blame for hyperacusis. They believe that damaged hairs can cause a pain response. Since there are hairs that receive different frequencies, the frequency corresponding to...

Hyperacusis — Related to Middle Ear or Inner Ear?

I just read an article in a semi recent New Yorker magazine that detailed the nerve damage behind the hairs and said that scientists have discovered that a lot of hearing loss is caused by that. They are hopeful that they can find a way to repair that damage and that it is an easier problem than...

    Questions About Hyperacusis

If you dig around for the science behind t & h, you will learn that you cannot make it physically better but you can make it physically worse by continued exposure to loud noises. I am fully habituated to my t and have been for years. But the h hurts and mine doesn't hurt less from continued...

Hyperacusis — Related to Middle Ear or Inner Ear?

I think the most common answer is that it is the inner ear, specifically the hairs in the cochlea and nothing can be done to replace the damaged ones at this point in time. There is some promising research being done. There are other causes, but from the research I have done it appears that the...

That's an answer, but not the only answer for everybody. Is It Possible My Tinnitus Is Part of My OCD...?

I think I have a little OCD in the mix with my bipolar disorder (as well as a bit of ADD). My hangups are little things. There are two switches to the lights in my hall at work. So I went and looked for Josef Rauschecker, and watched his TED Talk. That is very interesting. I have mentioned in other threads that my T & H get worse when I am depressed; that jives with his research. HE does say it is likely I had some hearing loss before tinnitus I guess it is possible...

I subscribe to the unpopular theory that a lot of tinnitus is a mental health issue. I think it is unpopular mostly because of stigma.
