So Much Flying in Past 2 Days! Ears on Fire! :-(

Why did you wear noise cancelling headphones while flying? They're not designed to protect your ears from acoustic trauma. You should have worn earmuffs such as the 3M X5A Peltor which would've been a wiser choice. They give you much better, and proven protection against the damaging noise...

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

Why are you guys overthinking this so much? I'd say one would have to be an immense idiot to screw up something so incredibly simple as installing a pair of gel pads. It would be obvious if the seal was incorrect. Environmental noise would seep into the muffs and you'd hear it clearly.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

It's not really DIY. The cushion part of the muffs are made by 3M to be user changeable. Don't worry, you'll be fine. It's easy.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

What makes you think that? It would make much more sense that the documented noise reduction rating would iclude the gel pads that they sell along side the Peltor line. Makes zero sense that they would sell an add-on that reduces the effectiveness of the product.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

3M sells polyurethane silicone gel pads for the Peltor line. It does not compromise the noise reduction of their product, otherwise they wouldn't sell them. In fact, my experience is that they seal much better around the ears. This leads to better noise reduction.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

Yes, it's not that difficult. That's exactly what I'm saying. Perception doesn't mean shit. What really matters is the actual attenuation values of the hearing protection that you're wearing.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

I've modified them without altering the actual product. It's quite easy and it only takes a few minutes. That would be unwise, I'm afraid. Many people on this forum have acquired tinnitus for this very reason.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

You've been misinformed about the range of their capabilities, unfortunately. They are just headphones made for music. Because of this, they're simply not certified as proper hearing protection and you shouldn't use them as such. It doesn't matter how you perceive the environmental noise when...

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

Because they're not properly certified hearing protection. They're not capable of reducing noise to a safe level. Also for the simple matter of fact that using headphones to mask noise from industrial machinery, aircrafts etc is simply not proper OSHA practice.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

No, they are by no means adequate hearing protection. Noise cancelling headphones =/= hearing protection. The reason the Peltor muffs are difficult to wear for you, is because they were never developed with the intention of use over a long period of time. Personally I've modified mine with...

No worries, plugs/muffs will definitely solve your anxiety about flying. Have a nice day.

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

Why do you keep asking the same question worded in different ways over and over again? This has been answered several times. Take the information you've been given and work with it, or just don't go on the trip at all. A busy road is anywhere from 75-85 db(A)... (You can find this information...

Should I Cancel My Trip Abroad?

Yes, they work great. They're also the strongest earmuffs on the market atm. I've also recommended these to you in another thead you've made about movie theaters. I use the X5A daily in a noisy work environment and they're great at blocking out loud machine noise and especially low frequency...

Do You Still Go to Movies?

Why don't you just buy a pair of really good earmuffs for use at the cinema? I personally wear my Peltor X5A when I go to see a movie, and it just makes the whole thing a much better experience. Most cinemas don't play at volumes above 80 dB, unless you go to one that uses the Atmos sound...

    Am I Being Punished?

How you feel about your situation isn't really the fault of the tinnitus, eye surgery or OCD. There's people in this world with no vision, no hearing, or even both who lead very productive and happy lives despite their conditions. There's people with no limbs who just like the blind and deaf...

High-Pitched Noise Deterrent Device Made Tinnitus Worse

I'm pretty sure they just have one setting. If it says 120 dB on the system then it probably does indeed emit 120 dB. I'm actually not surprised these things are allowed, unfortunately. There's all kinds of unwanted-people-deterrent products for sale these days while the health and safety of...

    I'm NOT Getting Better...

Earmuffs is a good idea. I personally use earmuffs on trains, busses, and out where there's heavy traffic and it's been working out pretty well for the last two ears. I have two sets - my commuter earmuffs, and my work earmuffs. The set I use for work is one of the strongest earmuffs you can...

High-Pitched Noise Deterrent Device Made Tinnitus Worse

I've seen one of these systems installed outside a bakery I visit on my way to work. It has a sticker on it that says the system emits 120 dB. Sounds at that volume could theoretically cause hearing damage, but probably not after 3 seconds...

    Tinnitus at the Movies

I use my Peltor X5A earmuffs at the cinema. Don't care what anyone thinks about it. I don't particularly trust the cinemas to be responsible with the volume, and they are know for not caring about the hearing health and safety of their visitors. I actively avoid cinemas that use the Atmos sound...

    Questions About Hyperacusis

It depends on many factors. Most cities have outdated buses that are too loud and too polluting. One time I measured the noise on a random bus in my city, the average level of noise on that particular bus was 78db(A). A level which I'm not comfortable with, so I wore hearing protection. The bus...
