Regarding those who struggle intensely; you're quite right when you say "that level of struggle is not the norm". Nevertheless, the problem with a comment like that is that a significant number of people new to Tinnitus Talk appear here struggling intensely - lack of sleep, hyper-focus, anxiety...

I have brittle bone disease, which affects the bones in my ears. My mum is deaf. Unfortunately, the night before surgery, I went to a local pub where I had...

How to Stop the Progression of Mild Hyperacusis?

There are different dB scales: dBA is commonly used in industry, but dBC is what you really need to pay attention to, along with dBZ. Lower frequencies carry high energy, so even though they don’t sound loud, they can be very damaging to your hearing. If you can feel the low frequency, it’s...

Am I More Susceptible to Further Hearing Damage Compared to Someone without Hearing Loss?

From my experience, tinnitus spikes become more frequent, debilitating, and prolonged over time. Many well-meaning people, probably correct in their own situations, advise me to use ear protection only when necessary. There’s a top audiologist in Holland, Michigan, who agrees with me: the level...

Hi @GrodanB, I hope you are doing as well as possible. I came across this post while looking for any potential solutions for the recurring sounds. For me, many sounds above 45 dB trigger it. This might be a long shot, but I’ve read about an MTHFR gene mutation that can lead to elevated...

That’s exactly right. In fact, when we discovered oil in the 1960s, it was quickly legislated to benefit the common good. That was me almost exactly. I was so stressed I couldn’t sleep, work, or exercise, and I had no appetite. I lost over 40 pounds. One person after another, in person (not on forums), told me they’d had the same experience and eventually habituated to it over time. They encouraged me to stay...

Can Stress Have Permanently Made My Tinnitus Worse? Unable to Cope Anymore

It all started two weeks before the flight. The morning flight made it worse, and by evening, when I tried to sleep, it was noticeably more intense. You might have just experienced fleeting tinnitus, which is completely separate and only lasts for short periods. It may seem much louder, especially if it’s a new sound. How to Cope with Irregular Tinnitus Sounds?

Yes, there is little that can be done to cope with constant, second-to-second change and the unending anxiety that arises from knowing it will keep changing into the future. Some people rely on heavy medication, but for many of us reactive unstable tinnitus is basically a 'game over' screen.
