Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

My surgeon is Dr.Mathew Hanson. There is a website that lists the names and state location of doctors familiar with middle ear myoclonus and can perform the surgery. My doctor is on this list although he was referred by my ENT, an old timer who knows something or two. Perhaps you can ask for...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

When I saw Sismanis he recorded a CD of my ear spasms for my use in seeking help back home. It was useless as no ENT was familiar with middle ear myo nor took the time to find out. I still have the CD. Japongus how you managed to live with this for 16 years is amazing. Many ENTs cant...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

I saw Sismanis in the US. He was practicing at a University in Virginia and highly recommended by Lib (he did her surgery). I believe he has retired since say 2008/9 unless he practices somewhere else. This I dont know. At that time the consultation fee was reasonable (about $200.00) and...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

Funny it was Dr. Sismanis who originally diagnosed me with Myo some seven or so years ago. It took me many years to find an ENT specialist (neuro-otologist) in my area w/ myoclonus middle ear experience. Both my ENT and neuro confirmed seeing my ear drums spasm during examination. I too have...

Stapedius Myoclonus Surgery — Can Someone Explain the Recovery Process?

Chelles my procedure was done through the ear - cutting ear dumb to access the muscles. Ive read about the endoscopic procedure being less invasive. As far as my ear being sensitive to noise without those tendons, its not so bad. Honestly, my ear was a lot worse with them. If a problem I...

    New... Thumping Sensation in Ear

It is okay to be fearful. This disorder is complicated and rare. Finding a qualified and experienced doctor is half the battle. The muscles can continue to move although cut, but unable to beat/knock against the ear drum. My high pitched T is getting better or I am getting use to the sound...

Stapedius Myoclonus Surgery — Can Someone Explain the Recovery Process?

Chelles I feel your frustration. Ive had MEM for eight years now. It goes into remission for a few years, but always comes back The surgery helped alot. The ear does not thump although I can feel the muscles move, they no longer knock against the ear drum. On the other hand, the bad ear...

    Stapedial Myoclonus Is Pretty Frightening

Hi Michael, Hope you have found relief and the spasms have stopped. I totally get it. With me its the constant thump. Goes on for hours and hours. Had it in both ears but cutting both tendons in one ear provided some relief. This disorder is the strangest thing. Most ENTs dont know how...

Stapedius Myoclonus Surgery — Can Someone Explain the Recovery Process?

The surgery is a simple out patient procedure. Your ear will be packed while healing resulting in temporary loss of some hearing. There will be some minor bleeding (change cotton swab daily). Hearing may take a few days to get adjusted too but not too bad. No sneezing, blowing nose or water...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

My dr. saw the ear drums dimple to confirm myo. Both tendons were cut. When the thumps morphed in a continuous tone it sound like a broken speaker with static and pressure. The pressure feeling I suspect is/was the sensation of the muscles being pulled so hard and tight. It made it difficult to...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

Well do my best to explain. The thumps/spasms were so bad it was felt and heard (subjective tinnitus). I felt my ear drumb moving all the time. Sometime with a feeling of fluid in the ear so it crackled, popped, snapped. The thumps would often morph into one long continuous note/thump with no...

    New... Thumping Sensation in Ear

Totally understand your hesitation in having surgery. I was desperate and had to take a leap of faith the surgery would offer some relief... it has. I still have myo in the other ear so it continues to thump. Once my doctor clears my healing ear, I will for sure schedule the other. The side...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

Don't know enough about hyperacusis to provide an answer. All I know is my myo started first thing in the morning once my eyes opened. It would thump constantly stopping only a few seconds at a time. I had to stop taking important health medications because symptoms got worse after taking...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

I did not have hyperacusis officially but the myoclonus was so severe in both ears from tensor tampani and stapedial tendons, my ears became sensitive to sound. I also suffer with a little bit of T. My neurotologist examined my ears and confirmed TTS once he saw the ear drums dimple. MRI came...

Myoclonus of the Middle Ear, Stapedius Muscle and Tensor Tympani Surgery

Had the surgery four weeks ago. I am happy with outcome so far. My ears were in bad bad shape. The mucles were not protecting my ears from loud sound so any noise (sometimes just on its own without noise), movement, change in pressure would trigger the deep painful spasms /thumps for hours and...

    New... Thumping Sensation in Ear

I have middle ear myoclonus since 2007. At first it started as a flutter in one ear then got worse with heavy deep thumps/spasms in both ears. Over the years my ears crackled, popped, snapped all day every day. One month ago I had surgery to cut the diseased muscles (tensor tampani and...
