Passive noise reduction is the way to go. The active "noise canceling" does not do anything to protect your hearing. When I fly I just use ear muffs over top of my ear buds to shut out all the jet sounds.

Also a tip for EQ'ing your instrument with plugs in: 1. Does your tone feel thin? 2. Does it sound very dead? 3. Do you feel like you are much too quiet? If all of those are a yes, Congratulations! Your guitar or bass now sounds perfect to those who are not wearing earplugs!
