Spikes do happen, and as you say they tend to return to the baseline. However, there's still the possibility of your tinnitus worsening. I've experienced both. Besides that, I'd say your post matches my experience of the last 25+ years of having tinnitus.

This is an old thread I started over 10 years ago. However, this weekend, for the first time in more than 25 years, I experienced tinnitus in my dream. In the dream, it was spiking quite badly, possibly because it's been spiking (and perhaps worsening?) while I'm awake as well.

Based on my own experience, and without claiming this applies to everyone, I'd say you're probably OK and it's your mind that does this to you. Even with that knowledge it can be hard to battle, though, but give it time. I hope you return to your "baseline" soon.

Experience. ;) A good start would be to be certain what causes tinnitus. Is it the brain or the ears? Devices to help cope aren't a cure.

Hope is good, but after this many months, it most likely won't improve. What will improve, though, is your ability to handle it. You and your brain will get used to it and think about it less and less, and eventually, you'll live just as if it's not there. To protect your ears in the future...

Yes, failure is inevitable along the way and a part of serious research. That, however, doesn't change my belief that a cure won't be available in my lifetime.

I must confess that I've not followed the research very much over the last five or so years, so I can't comment on the specific research projects. However, developing cures is a very slow process, and there's been no sign of any significant progress in the last 25 years since my tinnitus started...

It's still noisier in my left ear, but I only react negatively to it at night when trying to (go back to) sleep. I can't say whether this is mental or an actual increase.

For me, it's the opposite, especially when no other activity has caught my attention.

I'm sorry for you, and I hope you feel better soon. I've completely given up on there ever being a cure in my lifetime. I just hope that everyone suffering finds a way to cope and habituate to the sound.

I've decided to never go to a concert again. I made that decision a long time ago, but made ONE exception when I attended Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in London in 2017. It went fine, but I got that typical spike afterwards (most likely caused by worrying about my tinnitus having worsened.)...

I use Sony WH1000XM3 and I have no increase in my tinnitus. However, if you use them or any other NC headphones believing they are protection it's no surprise your tinnitus increases. They're headphones, not ear protection.

Loud music/noise with not enough protection... It caused a louder tinnitus and a slightly different ringing.

I don't know for sure. As far as I know you can get it from short as long as prolonged exposure to noise.

@Lumi Not necessarily. Normal volume over time in headphones can still be the cause. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I still don't understand how sounds we can't hear can cause tinnitus.

That's so sad. We're so different also, all of us. Some of us have "glass ears" that break and get worse easily, it seems, while others seem to have ears that don't get affected at all. Add to that our different ability to cope. I'm sure there are people with worse ringing than I have that...

That's why I want over-ear, preferably noise cancelling so that I can hear well without it being too loud. I use headphones now and then and it's mostly so that I won't disturb my surroundings OR so that I can concentrate when there's too much noise at work. I'm quite comfortable after all this...
