Yo, I would definitely wear foam plugs. Not much else you can do unless you also want to wear protective earmuffs... maybe one of those helmets can be of additional hearing protection but probably not if there is a hole for you to hear through. Sure :) I have never had the foam plugs go in so deep that it has touched my eardrum (at least I've never sensed that), nor have I put them in so deep that they got stuck. I can insert them so far that the outer end of the plug is flush with the opening of the ear canal...they do take more care...

My favorite earplugs are Hearos Extreme 33 dB, they are blue...they are pretty fat and so fill up my ear canal very well, whereas other plugs don't. But often my ears kill when wearing any earplugs...just the sensitivity of the canal I believe, maybe wearing them too often. Also the Hearos 33 dB...

Yes I notice the same thing...good to point out for situations where you have plugs in but no muffs with you! It must squish all that foam together blocking out more noise, or perhaps just the added effect of pushing the tragus in blocks more sound.

That's an interesting question. I don't know of any, although I don't read a lot. Hopefully someone else can tell you of some authors or characters with tinnitus. No doubt there are authors with it, but if they've mentioned that in an interview or somewhere I don't know.
