Poll: How Long It Took for Your Tinnitus to Stabilize to a Baseline After Your Original Onset?

Good question for those with hyperacusis/“reactive” tinnitus I suppose. If I knew somehow that my tinnitus would stabilize aka turn non-“reactive” one day, I would be 99,9% less stressed about it already.

    Is This Hyperacusis?

Maybe, a little... nothing that I’m satisfied with so far.

    Is This Hyperacusis?

At first I thought it was only “reactive” tinnitus but over time when I started re-exposing myself to all kinds of noises I found out there’s much more to it than just tinnitus going up with sound for example squealing brakes sound louder than before, there’s aural fullness, random pains and...

    The Term Reactive Tinnitus

@David S Thanks for your answer. My last question would be what kind of noise (white or pink) did you listen through your WNGs? I suppose you had to set them pretty low so they don’t upset your tinnitus. And if so, did you listen to this low volume all the way to the end?

    The Term Reactive Tinnitus

@David S How long did it take for your “reactive tinnitus” to almost subside before the acoustic trauma? Did it start dissipating gradually or you habituated and became unaware of it?

    The Term Reactive Tinnitus

I agree with @David S that we need a proper definition for this since quite a few including myself experience it in the absence of symptoms of the classic hyperacusis, so I suppose the mechanism is a bit different. If you read the TRT book, Jastreboff describes that a mechanism for the category...

Morse Code, Birds Chirping Tinnitus — Is That a Sign of Something Worse Coming in the Near Future?

It could be some sort of middle ear myoclonus if you have hyperacusis.

What Do You Want to Know from Researchers?

A simple question that hasn’t been answered yet. If sound sensitive (“reactive”) tinnitus is truly a manifestation of hyperacusis or could be a separate entity as well as any ideas why it happens. Thanks.

    Desensitisation Therapy

White noise is known to cause this effect when hyperacusis/“reactive tinnitus” is present and the volume is not set properly. Maybe try switching to pink noise which is preferred by most patients for desensitization therapy. And I guess you should start with very low volume this time.

    Dysacusis (Hearing Distortion) etc.

There’s a paper from Klochoff who believes that all these auditory phenomena (dysacusis, distortion) are due to Tensor Tympani Syndrome. http://www.tinnitus.org/Tensor%20tympani%20syndrome_Klochoff.pdf For over 6 months I’ve been experiencing the following: ear fullness upon exposure to...

I Have Auditory Recruitment with Ear Pain and Tinnitus

You said you have hearing loss. What’s the degree of your hearing loss? You wanna share your audiogram and your LDLs (if measured)? Recruitment is generally an intolerance for loud sounds. This doesn’t seem to be your case. The majority who have hypersensitivity and hearing loss, have...

Reactive Tinnitus: Silent Sound vs. Loud Sound — the Same Impact?

Based on my experience, even "silent" sounds can increase the "reactive" tinnitus especially static, broadband sounds that contain lots of frequencies. This is very real and not psychological.

    Does Reactive Tinnitus Stop Reacting?

Having “reactive” tinnitus for about 5 months already, I’ve noticed that listening to low volume pink noise for more than 12 hours per day through ear devices for almost two months so far, my condition seems to be better now compared to how I was when it started when even my voice would increase...

    Hyperacusis, What Helped You?

Michael, I’ve read many of your posts and I found them quite helpful so I thank you for that. However, I’m still trying to find out whether those who claim TRT (the real) is a scam have actually tried it and it didn’t work or they just reinforce negative thinking.

    Hyperacusis, What Helped You?

22 years? Have you been a hermit for 22 years? You should give TRT at least a try.

I Talked with a Hearing Guy Who Said There Can Be a Custom Hearing Aid That Will "Lessen" Sounds

What you describe usually benefits those with hearing loss and recruitment, not those with true hyperacusis I believe although it sounds like a good idea.

Did Ultrasound Ever Affect Your Tinnitus?

If this is what the author will use in his practice then I have to apologize. Definitely you need quite some protection then and still it might not be safe enough. I responded to his question of whether hospital utrasound can affect the tinnitus based on my experience.

Did Ultrasound Ever Affect Your Tinnitus?

You can’t even hear the medical ultrasound, how it would affect your tinnitus? This is laughable. You need to relax and take it easy.

I Need Someone to Help Me Figure Out What's Going on with My Ears

In your first post you mentioned that you get fullness, dizziness and the whooshing sound when you lift your head. BPPV is a very common cause of dizziness that is triggered by changes in the position of the head and lasts usually a few seconds. I think auditory symptoms are absent though in...

    Avoiding Sound After a Setback?

Hi Anna, If your only problem is the increase in tinnitus after exposure to sounds, I wouldn’t worry too much unless the tinnitus remains elevated after a good night’s sleep. Then I would advise caution. I think it’s better to try some low level masking (eg crickets) instead of complete...

    When Is Enough ENOUGH

Since the condition is already somewhat debilitating to you as you describe as there is nothing you can avoid to make this better, I would definitely investigate this further and research treatment options. Ringing is nothing compared to what this disease can cause to someone from what I’m...

    When Is Enough ENOUGH

Hello, I was randomly looking at the report of your CT scan. You have a diagnosis of dehiscence over your left superior semicircular canal. This could quite possibly be the cause of your brain fog, fatigue and some of your other symptoms. Also the mean age at the time of diagnosis of this...

Reactive Tinnitus and TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)

“Reactive tinnitus” and hyperacusis may seem to be two different things but they both fall under the umbrella of a more general condition which is called decreased sound tolerance. Tinnitus does not have “reactive” properties itself. It’s the oversensitivity within the auditory system which...

Reactive Tinnitus and TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)

Hi Anna, I’ve read about two individuals in another forum with the worst type of “reactive tinnitus” (Category IV) who got way much better, one through TRT and the other by doing individual sound therapy (Pink noise CD). My understanding is that this condition can get better but don’t expect...

Ear Pain This Week. What to Do?

I had exactly the same thing about 2 weeks ago and still it hasn’t gone away completely. Random, intermittent, faint, irrelevant of sound exposure ear pain that was preceded by some short of crackling, clicking or twitching inside my ear. I assume this pain is a result of trigeminal nerve...

    Housebound

How would you describe your reactive tinnitus at the moment? Do you have exacerbations? And if so, how long do they last? In the cases where the ears are very sensitive, gradual introduction of sound might be required under the supervision of a professional. I’m planning to visit a TRT...

    Housebound

Hello, I’ve been experiencing this phenomenon of “reactive tinnitus” for about 4 months now and I can tell what a nuisance it is and how it can limit one person’s lifestyle, especially if the more predominant features of hyperacusis are present. My advice would be to find an audiologist...
