How to Get the Quietest MRI Experience?

So I spent a lot of time searching and trying to find MRI machines that wouldn't irritate my tinnitus and ear pain. I ended up having a scan done on an upright MRI machine, and while unfortunately they weren't able to get the scan done in the specific area I needed, I will say it was not...

Fix for Sound Induced Pain — Stellate Ganglion Block?

Exactly, just because it did not work very well initially doesn't mean you shouldn't try a couple more injections. If you have any sort of relief, even for a few hours, it likely DID work like it was supposed to. By the 5th injection, the patient in Myriam's paper had a month of relief.

Fix for Sound Induced Pain — Stellate Ganglion Block?

Did you have it done with Botox or just the standard stuff? Because the effect only lasted for a couple days with Myriam's patient with a regular SGB. The patient had 4 or 5 total done, each one lasting longer than the last. The Botox is what lasted for months.

    Can Overprotecting Permanently Worsen Hyperacusis?

Everyone is different and the reason for ear issues may stem from different things. With that said, I think walking around always worried about ear protection and loud noises only exacerbates the issue and basically turns your life into a game of avoiding everything and constantly worrying. I...

    MRI with Hyperacusis

Are you in the US? I've emailed Cannon and called them and they have yet to find me an MRI machine with Pianissimo. Last time they sent me a location that didn't actually have the technology.

Fix for Sound Induced Pain — Stellate Ganglion Block?

No one else has wanted to try the SGB was what she told me. While she did say it was moderately invasive, all the research I've done says it's a pretty minimal risk procedure. But it is essentially unproven except for one case so I can understand why other may be hesitant. She also has yet to...

Fix for Sound Induced Pain — Stellate Ganglion Block?

I hope it goes well for you. I asked Myriam during my consultation if she knew of anyone else who had been given an SGB and there wasn't anyone, so I'm sure she'd love to hear from you whether it works or not (hopefully it works just as well as it did for her patient!). I'm very much...

Best Advice for Someone Going Through Acoustic Shock? How to Protect Ears?

Get some musicians earplugs, wear them if you feel like things are too loud, but don't wear earplugs unless you really need to. The small amount of research done on a acoustic shock suggests the symptoms are caused by the body's response to sound, activating the Tensor Tympani Muscle too much...

Vibration in Ear After Loud Car Drove By — Bruised Eardrum?

The vibration you're feeling is probably your tensor tympani muscle. It seems to be a possible cause for a lot of people here who have ear pain, especially when you feel vibrations or fullness.

For many people the symptoms get better. I'm still having some issues but between ignoring it and it (I think) getting a bit better, I can generally get through every day okay without it bothering me too much. The worst is things like sirens, I cover my ears when things like ambulances go by...

    Has Anybody’s Hyperacusis Disappeared 100%?

Possibly, how long did it take you to get to where you were at prior to this setback? If you get to that point quicker, than it's likely you are improving. And keep in mind, there is no scientific evidence linking damage to human ears and hyperacusis. We simply don't know if that's the case, and...

I'm still waiting to see more people try the stellate ganglion block. It worked quite well for one patient, and more specifically blocks nerves relating to the ear and not the entire CNS. There is a paper being worked on right now involving that patient. I will probably give it a shot myself...

I contacted Myriam Westcott in Australia. While I do live in the US, the clinic I went to was willing to try the treatments she suggested even though she isn't an American clinician. Your results may vary on whether or not a pain clinic or your own personal doctor would be willing to do the...

That depends on your audiologist. Mine recognizes it's likely trigeminal nerve pain and not TMJ. People with Hyperacusis Losing the Reflex Protecting Their Own Voice from Damaging Their Hearing?

Lyrica and gabapentin are both used for nerve pain. For some people it helps take the edge of the pain caused from hyperacusis. People with Hyperacusis Losing the Reflex Protecting Their Own Voice from Damaging Their Hearing?

That's totally unfounded. The Tensor Tympani muscle is what dampens noises like yelling and chewing. Some people with hyperacusis do develop issues with the muscle, however it's usually because it is OVER active, and tenses up at even the slightest noise, causing a bunch of issues. Your voice...

    Constant Pain from Acoustic Shock

Yeah it's totally different. Right ear is what I think most people here consider hyperacusis. Sensitive to high frequencies, ear pain and fullness after loud sounds, pain is usually gone after a few hours or the next day, and some loudness hyperacusis. Left ear includes sharp pain, dull pain...

It doesn't need to treat those things. In a perfect world we'd know exactly how to fix everything that's wrong, but in cases where we don't know the answers, alleviating symptoms that are crippling people is the next best option.

I'm also very curious about this. Right now that surgery seems like the most realistic thing that could currently help hyperacusis sufferers. It's had good results supposedly, but the sample size is so small (30 people or so) that it's hard to get too excited about it without more information.

Car Alarm Went Off without Protection

100% agree. The lack of research on something that can be as debilitating as hyperacusis is a joke.
  58. M

Car Alarm Went Off without Protection

Yeah, a car alarm sounds more like an acoustic shock then an acoustic trauma. Shock is from a sound not loud enough to do actual damage (hypothetically at least), but your body reacts in a way that causes these issues. I'm dealing with acoustic shock right now, Prednisone did nothing for me.
