Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Still hum free. I wear the guard every night. Has anyone else had any success with a mouth guard preventing the hum in their ear(s)?

It’s a custom fit. Made of a fairly hard plastic, but not too hard. They took a mould of my top teeth, and then it was custom made. The mould fits tightly on my top teeth.

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

I suspect there are many causes, as my original post states. I ruled out about 7 other things until I finally went to the dentist. Check out the original post of this thread. You’ll see all the things I thought it could be.

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

With heat, massage, and most importantly the mouth guard, I’d say within a week to ten days it was completely gone. Have not heard it since. And I had it bad. I am so grateful this fixed it.

Omg. I didn't catch this. That's hilarious. I just fixed my profile info. :)

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

I’d agree that what you are saying could be happening, although I’m not certain that hair cells can be bent or damaged, causing misfiring. I’m not saying you are wrong-just that I’ve not read that. But what you are saying could be a physical explanation. I for sure agree that when it stops by...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Heating pad a few times. Remember though, my tinnitus was a low pitch hum that I could modulate. Not high pitch.

When you clench, you’ll feel the Masseter muscle flex. That’s the muscle I massage and apply heat to. I just do it a bit every day now. When I’m driving. But I do think the mouth guard is the most helpful as I’m not clenching at night.

When you press your palm against your ear, you don’t hear a low roar? Like the ocean? That’s what I mean by vibration.

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Ben, I swear, your story was identical to mine. Changing head position cannot raise your hair cells in your cochlea from the dead. Thats why I always believed mine was physical in nature. I thought it might be a blood vessel, or a growth (mri ruled that out). I think the hum we are hearing is...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

To me, it seems that if the nerves/hair cells are damaged, that means they are dead. Tinnitus can be caused by the brain replacing frequencies lost by hearing damage. So, if your hum is due to the cells that receive low frequencies being dead, I don’t see them coming back to life by shaking...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi. I’m massaging the section about two inches directly below my ear canal opening. Clench your teeth and you’ll feel a muscle contract around there. That’s the one I’m massaging. I’m not massing all that much, a few times a day for maybe 10 minutes. If I feel tense, I do it more. The one...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Ya, I am hopeful others will find relief. That’s why I created the thread. But I think the key is to reduce tension in the jaw muscles. For me, that involves massaging them quite a bit, wearing a professional mouth guard, and actively trying not to clench during the day. It’s remarkable how...

About a year with a few breaks here and there.

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi. For me, I couldn’t get it to go away quickly with a certain behaviour like a hot shower. I think it takes dedicated regular jaw massage, heat, avoiding clenching and a professional mouth guard. I think a professional mouth guard is key because then your jaw sits the way it should. A generic...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi there. It did come and go before, but looking back, it would go away when I was less stressed, so clenching and grinding less too. Now that I seem to know the cause, I am avoiding the clenching and grinding and thus the symptoms. Plus, I’m making sure those jaw muscles don’t get tense...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

My dentist also told me to apply heat to my jaw muscles. He told me to use a microwave safe bag full of rice heated in the microwave for a few seconds. Be careful not to heat it too much though. I found heat helped. It’s been over a month with silence. I’d try the professional mouthguard...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Once the dentist confirmed I was clenching and grinding, it took a week to get the professional teeth guard made. I went and bought a generic one from the drug store that day, and began wearing it at night, and the day when I could. I focussed on relaxing my jaw muscles and massaging them...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

It started a year ago. During a stressful time at work. When I was at work, or outside it wasn’t that noticeable though. I measured the ambient background noise at my work and it was around 50 dB, and that would mask it. The air ventilation system would produce enough low ambient background...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

I had every iteration possible. There were days where it would be humming all day and night with no silence unless I turned on a fan or something. There were days where it would exist all day, but then go away at night. Also, sometimes it would be quiet in the day and then appear at night...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Covering your ears, or plugging them, will only mask low frequency tinnitus because the sound created by these actions are low frequency in nature. That’s why a subtle fridge hum will mask the sound, but a much louder high pitch sound won’t.

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Here’s my theory as to the mechanism in which the hum could be caused. We know our body has a baseline hum. When normally put our hand over our ears, or plug our ears with our fingers, we can hear a low pitch sound. That is normal. We are creating vibration that our ears detects. When our...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi. If you have nerve damage, wouldn’t your hum be constant, and never go away? Maybe buy some disposable mouth guards and wear them at night and the day for a couple weeks. In the day, just wear it when you can. Also, massage those muscles that flex when you clench. Not sure what they are...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi Well I suppose mine could be in remission, but the question is what’s causing the remission? If it’s jaw massage, managing stress, and a mouth guard, then I’ll take it, as that’s a small price to pay. In other words, I do believe mine would come back if I don’t manage my stress, keep my jaw...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Yes. But I don’t believe it stopped. I just couldn’t hear it. For example, when sitting in my house, in quiet, the room would be say 30 dB. I could hear the hum. When the fridge kicked in, the room would jump to 42 dB. So that sound was a bit more vibration than the hum being created by an...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hi Ben, Actually your story was literally the closest to mine. I’ve experienced all that you have. I’ve read your posts. I agree that the audiograms don’t show any low pitch loss because they only go down to 200 Hz, usually. However, I tested those frequencies online with headphones, and...

Low Pitch Ringing/Hum Went Away After Using a Mouth Guard and Regular Jaw Massage

Hello everyone! I felt the need to share my story, which is similar to so many that I’ve read. Symptoms: Low pitch ringing or hum around 80 Hz in my right ear. It would come and go but could last for months at a time 24/7. It felt like a vibration or rumbling engine in the distance. It was...
