Research's Attempt to Objectively Assess Tinnitus

I think we all knew their conclusion intuitively (that tinnitus arising from different causes can have different characteristics), but it's nice to see someone study it systematically. Thanks for posting.

No Hearing Damage, No Loud Noise Exposure — My Tinnitus Started Out of the Blue

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My tinnitus also started out of nowhere about a year ago. I don’t have any obvious hearing loss, although they only tested up to 8000 Hz, and my tinnitus is around 9200 Hz, so I might have some hearing damage in the higher frequencies where they don’t...

    2024 US Presidential Election

Wow. Where are you getting your information? Let me guess—Fox News? I can’t get over the craziness of this. It’s incredible that you would rather vote for a lying, cheating, cowardly conman like Trump than a hard-working, intelligent woman with a strong history of public service. But I’m...

Looks Like I've Joined the Club — Tinnitus Onset After Exercise

I'm so sorry you've joined this club. Like you, my tinnitus came out of nowhere and was accompanied by muffled hearing. My hearing returned to mostly normal after a couple of weeks, but the tinnitus remained. Mine has been intermittent from the start—one loud day followed by two quiet or even...

    Clonazepam (Klonopin, Rivotril)

This has been my experience, too. Clonazepam supposedly lowers the loudness of tinnitus for most people -- I guess you and I are among the unlucky few it doesn't work for. Do you find Alprazolam lowers tinnitus loudness?

Repeated Bilateral Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation over Auditory Cortex for Tinnitus

Wow -- please keep us posted. It looks like the visits are virtual, so it would be available to those not in the NY area. I'll be curious to find out the cost, since all the treatments are supervised. Maybe we could get together and sponsor someone to try it?

Multifaceted Wellness & Exacerbating Factor Relief Approach Significantly Decreased My Tinnitus

Thanks for posting -- it's great to hear someone's tinnitus has improved so much. I've tried many of the things on your list without effect (unfortunately), but there are still some more I could try. Best wishes to you -- I hope it stays quiet!

    Sound Pharmaceuticals (SPI-5557 & SPI-1005)

I completely believe this. My tinnitus started after a COVID-19 booster vaccination and then worsened after a COVID-19 infection. I think it's either from inflammation or an autoimmune reaction. I'm hopeful for any treatment.

    Post COVID-19 Tinnitus

Ah, me too. My tinnitus started after my COVID-19 booster last fall. It had improved somewhat until I got COVID-19 for the first time in May. It definitely worsened in the month after I had recovered from COVID-19; I think I must have had some auto-immune reaction to the COVID-19 virus proteins...

The Volume and Frequency of My Tinnitus Have Changed

Do they think the bulging disc and stenosis in your neck are linked to your increased tinnitus? If so, the surgery might help. How is your hearing? Have you experienced any further hearing loss after your SSNHL in 2015? Some people with hearing loss find hearing aids effectively reduce their...

Tinnitus Started Suddenly from COVID-19 Infection and Is Now My Main Long Covid Symptom

You have described my (COVID-19 infection and COVID-19-vaccine-induced) tinnitus exactly. Mine is there every morning, but two out of three mornings, it disappears after a shower. On the third day, it is loud and unrelenting. I might have some high-frequency hearing loss in my left ear, but...

    Fleeting Tinnitus → Chronic Tinnitus?

Hi there, I also play the piano, and after I suddenly developed tinnitus, I became much more careful about sound levels. I was surprised to find that even relatively quiet playing on my piano was around 80-85 decibels. You might want to try using musician's earplugs for a while or limit the...

sorry -- I just saw this. Yes, this fluctuating thing is weird. After nine months, mine is still approximately two quiet days and one loud day, but it's not as set in stone as it was in the beginning. Sometimes I get an extra quiet day.... hope yours heals up quickly.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection with Pre-Existing Tinnitus

Hi all, I've introduced myself before. My tinnitus started shortly after my last COVID-19 booster in the fall of 2023. It's intermittent: two relatively quiet days followed by one very loud (8/10) day. It started to improve this spring—the loud day was down to about a 4 or 5/10, and sometimes, I...

At a Crossroads Four Months In — Tinnitus from Stress, Noise or Medication (Mebendazole)

I also struggled with sleep around the four-month mark. I didn't want to take anything since there's a report out there of nearly everything making tinnitus worse. But out of desperation, I started taking a very low dose (~3.5-5 mg) of Mirtazapine each night. It knocked me out, and getting more...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

I find Melatonin helpful -- well, anything that helps me sleep seems to keep my tinnitus stable. I take Melatonin and 5 mg of Mirtazapine, and I sleep pretty well. I think most evidence suggests that Melatonin helps alleviate tinnitus, or is neutral. I haven't heard any other reports of it...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

Well, I'm pretty quiet to begin with -- no loud music, etc... I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to protect my ears, but I haven't done anything unusually loud, either. Sigh. Just sad. I was hoping I'd be one of the people whose intermittent tinnitus stayed that way for years.

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

I appear to have jinxed myself by writing my initial post. After five months of every-third-day hissing, for the last week, it's become every other day. I suppose round-the-clock hissing is next. I'm so depressed. Those quiet days were the only things making this tolerable. Could it be because...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

I wonder how many of us have this sort of intermittent tinnitus? The audiologist I spoke with seemed to think I was just imagining the fluctuations in volume, but there are certainly a good number of people with the same symptoms on Tinnitus Talk. It is frustrating, because it implies that my...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

Yes -- it can be so loud it wakes me up. If that happens, it often starts 90 minutes after I fall asleep, or in other words, at the end of one sleep cycle. Even if I fall back asleep, it'll be loud the next day. I think @Joe Cuber had a trick of waking up super-early that seemed to prevent a bad...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

Yes, sometimes it's so loud it wakes me up, often after only 90 minutes of sleep -- about the time it takes for one sleep cycle. And hence the Mirtazapine. :-) I hope Seroquel works for you.

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

Interesting. Mine definitely resets when I sleep; what I have when I wake up is what I have for the whole day. If it's the hiss, it will get louder in late afternoon/early evening and reach a roar around dinner time. It starts to back off around the time I go to sleep; when I wake up in the...

Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

I don't know anything about ETD (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?). When my tinnitus started, I had muffled hearing in one ear and horrible headaches. Intermittent Tinnitus and Taking Clonazepam to Prevent a Loud Tinnitus Day?

Thanks, and good to know (though I'm female) -- I'd be happy if it left my system a little sooner. The first time I took Mirtazapine, I took half a 7.5 mg pill (so 3.75 mg), slept like a log for 8 hours and awoke to total silence. It was amazing, though I was a bit groggy. Now (about a month...

Hi all -- I've posted on here before a few times, but I've never really introduced myself. I developed tinnitus suddenly last fall, five days after my COVID-19 vax. Fluctuating (Pitch, Quality, Loudness) Unilateral Tinnitus — Part of the Challenge Is Sleep Apnea

Hi @Joe Cuber -- yeah, this cyclic thing is so weird. On "quiet" days, I wake up with some ringing, but it goes away with a shower. Which is also pretty strange. I do have some very high-pitched overtones, though, the rest of the day. It's such a high frequency, I don't think I could hear it...
