Cause of Tinnitus

I went to see an ENT on Monday. She suggested a regime of antitoxicants/medication that I have outlined below as she thinks I have nerve damage and the regime may help with my tinnitus. I am 7-8 months into having tinnitus.

What do you think? Worth a try? I really don't want to make my tinnitus worse, and as medication caused it I am now very apprehensive when it comes to taking medications etc. Plus I now have a massive mistrust of doctors, and some of these antitoxidants/drugs are not passed for use in the US and other places (although the drugs that caused my tinnitus are so I don't think it makes a lot of difference).

I am already 4 days in. I have stopped the Cavinton as it was keeping me awake, so I am taking a combination of Mexidol/Actovegin for the remainder of the first 10 days. Actovegin is used by cyclists.

Also, I am still taking the AD fluoxetine and am now on statins for three months (due to massive weight gain brought on by stress due to tinnitus).

The Regime

1) 10 days
(intravenous drip) - Cavinton every other day / Mexidol every other day / Actovegin every day after Cavinton/Mexidol

Cavinton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinpocetine

Mexidol - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoxypine
Actovegin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actovegin

2) 10 days (injected into buttocks) - Milgamma (Vitamin B complex)

1-3) 30 days
(tablet) - Betaserc - Can be started now in phase 1, but we are waiting to see if I have any side effects from the other antitoxicants/drugs first.

Betaserc - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betahistine

Any views welcome.

That's very interesting. There are threads in the forum on vinpocentine, you can find them with the search function. B complex is a classic, and so are betahistines. I tried both without success.
I have not heard about the other ones.

Mexidol is Russian, and not approved for any medical use in the United States or Europe.

Actovegin is siad to enhance aerobic oxidation, so cyclists use it to enhance performance, ie doping.

Also, "Actovegin has large amounts of superoxide dismutase enzymes and magnesium."

I really doubt it's all going to do much, but I just don't want to make things worse than they are now, hence the thread.

Statins are a class of drugs that can cause many side effects. It has also been linked to serious adverse events.

I worked with a cardiologist once who told me statins can cause more harm than good and should be a last resort.

There are many alternatives to lowering cholesterol.

Sorry to be negative about these drugs but since you have had troubles with medications before I just think you should research up on statins.

I wouldn't bother. I'd say of it worked, more people would have adopted it.
Here it seems quite a standard approach to have prophylactic regimes like these. In the UK though they wouldn't do anything. I don't know what to do for the best really.

Believe me Star, every time I put a drug inside my body now I hate myself a little bit more. Drugs have destroyed my life, but they now seem the only thing that may help me.

As for statins in particular, I was an active person, but all that went down the drain as soon as tinnitus appeared. Put on 18kgs in 6 months and have been very inactive. Tinnitus depresses me so much that I find it hard to be motivated to exercise and lose the weight through exercise and diet. I don't have plaque build up though.

I really don't want to take any of the drugs listed above including the statins. Don't know what to do.

EDIT - I think i will stop them. But it means seriously getting my body moving and eating healthy. My wife will have a fit though when i say I'm not going to take them.

Please do not Hate yourself for taking prescribed medications, sometimes they are necessary! However sometimes there are alternatives which are much safer.

I understand the tinnitus causing you depression, this is very common, so yes your motivation would be lacking, but if you can exercise this could provide you with so many more benefits than just losing weight. Your mood may actually improve and that would be a huge plus for you.

Explain to your wife you are going to try diet and exercise for a three month period instead. I am sure she will be more happy to hear that you are doing something far more positive than swallowing a pill.

Statins may lower cholesterol but you have said yourself the problem is because of your diet and no exercise.

Without addressing these issues it will be hard for your body to return to good health.

I know you can turn this around, JUST DO IT!

Stopped the statin. Only took if for 8 days anyway. Wife seemed OK with it.

Think I may stop the regime above, too. I feel like I am taking unnecessary risks where there is little to gain.
Still not sure though, but need to make a decision by tomorrow as I need to go for my next session.

Except for one night I have not slept well since starting the regime last Monday. Before that I had been sleeping pretty well for someone with severe tinnitus. It could be due to the regime, the statins, the -17 weather here or maybe something else.
