Bad Experience with Julian Cowan Hill

I have often wondered about Julian. He seems so certain, yet most people familiar with tinnitus know it can have a wide variety of causes. Hands-on therapy is not going to work in many cases. Something worked for him, so he assumes it will work for everyone. That cannot possibly be true for such a complex and varied condition like tinnitus.

I have tried all sorts of things: massage, CBT, TRT, Bowen therapy, psychotherapy, reading books about tinnitus, watching countless videos, and experimenting with so many sound masking tracks that I have lost count. None of it has made any difference. Some days, randomly, the tinnitus is slightly quieter, but overall, it is getting louder all the time. Now it is practically unbearable. I have to medicate heavily just to sleep, which has created a whole new set of problems.

I have lost hundreds of dollars to Treble Health in the US. They seem locked into a single-track approach that does not work for everyone. I paid for one group session with Julian and even considered enrolling with Joey Remenyi in Australia, but I realized in time that she was one of the worst of the lot. Her team bombarded me with emails for months, trying to get me to pay for her courses. Eventually, I blocked them because I was fed up with their predatory behavior and the greed driving it. It is completely amoral to exploit suffering people and sell them false hope.

I mean, maybe some of these "practitioners" believe their own hype, but they certainly know how to make money. Then there is Liam Boehm, another awful example, a snake oil salesman par excellence. Beware of him, too.

As for what caused my tinnitus, I will probably never know. It could have been any of the following: long-term use and too-fast withdrawal from Paroxetine (an SSRI), a COVID-19 booster shot two weeks prior, neck pain or tension, work stress, or none of them at all. One day, about three years ago, I woke up with it, and it has steadily worsened since.

Tinnitus has driven a truck through my life, and I struggle every single day. If anyone ever figures out how to actually cure it, then perhaps they will deserve to make some money. Until then, I wish people would stop peddling false promises.

I read that Julian's tinnitus is due to being badly hearing impaired in one or both ears, according to his videos. Does that not qualify him to speak about noise-induced hearing loss?

There is nothing wrong with his message, but in my opinion, if you are a sensitive person with a very reactive nervous system, you need the tinnitus to settle first before all that advice works. This kind of person needs to believe that nervous system regulation is actually possible.

Having said that, I could not believe how severe tinnitus can get, especially from anxiety and lack of sleep. Since tinnitus is unlikely to randomly get worse in the absence of new damage, I can only conclude that negative nervous system loops are a real thing and need to be treated seriously, possibly with environmental changes or strong drugs to reset the system.
