Cause of Tinnitus
Initially stress, but noise exposure made it worse
Hello all,

Today, I placed down a glass of water and accidentally whilst not looking set it down on top of another empty glass with force.

This resulted in a big high pitch clink of the two glasses hitting each other, that straight away caused a loud spike in my nearby left ear. The spike has not improved yet.

I've been in situations before where it has spiked and gone down, and I'm trying to tell myself it will improve, but my ear was close by to the glasses and it was a loud and high pitch hit.

The same ear had a permanent spike from a very loud door bang, which is why I am worried that this could be permanent too.

Has anyone had any similar experiences??

Much thanks, as always,
R

Try not to worry as it should settle down soon.
Try not let anxiety take hold and give it time to settle over a day or two....lots of love glynis

Very Very Doubtful that you caused any damage, Keep yourself busy on other things, give it some time to pass and try and keep a positive out look, everyone bangs things from time to time with no problems.

Thank you Glynis, you're right, I will remain calm and give it some time. Good night

Thank you Louie,

You're right - I will try to do that. Sometimes it's nice to come here and have reassurance from others who understand.

Thanks and take care

@Rust . Hi your spike what ever the cause it will go down to baseline . I've had numerous spikes caused through loud sounds. Sometimes we just can't avoid these unwanted sounds.
You're absolutely right Richard, and thank you.

I really need to stop persuing the perfect tinnitus life, and accept that these things will happen - and improve.

Take care,
R

I hope you feel better soon. The spike should settle to baseline. It happened to me too with 2 crashing glass bowls..it was horrible...but it settled. Now I try to have mostly plastic bowls, cups and plates. The little things that help...sigh.

Hope things are improving for you. I doubt you did any physical damage to your ears, but understand how you have been affected. I'm currently dealing with a short term (over a week now) increase in my T perception and it's not fun. I'm taking care to sleep, relax, eat well, and try not to get too nervous. It's not easy. Best wishes, Trebor.

Thank you. No improvement as of yet, but I will try and give it longer and believe that it will subside to baseline soon.

Thanks you @Engineer , you;re right, we both have to focus and wait it out. I guess we have to take hope in the fact it usually recedes to baseline after time.

How are you doing after a couple of days?
Thanks for checking in @XtonyX
No improvement as of yet, I am really hoping it will improve! I will come back and update everyone in a few weeks after it has had more time to settle. Here's hoping to improvement!

Hi all, thank you for your positive words.

I'm afraid to say that I have had no improvement after 11 days.

My spikes from loud bangs etc usually don't last more than about a week, and so I am very worried now that this could be permanent.

I just don't understand how just a high pitch glass clinking can cause such a worsening of my tinnitus. It has turned my life upside down, and I'm not sure I can get used to this new level of intrusiveness.

Here's to hoping it can still improve – I really hope it does.

How long did it take for it to settle after the bowls crashing, @OnceUponaTime?

Hi @Rust,
Sorry to hear you are having a hard time at the moment.
Might be worth getting your hearing tested to see if you have any hearing loss.
See you sleeping ok ?....lots of love glynis

Hi @Rust ,
It settled the same day it happened. I'm sorry that you are not feeling better yet. I truly hope it settles for you.... take some magnesium at night, it might help. Try not to stress it to much... (I know, easier said than done) stay positive. I'll be praying for you. :)

I think most people here have very sensitive ears. Or maybe are just too attentive in rarer cases. I heard of people going to concerts every single day that were very loud during their teen years with no hearing loss or T. I go to one concert without earplugs and my ears have felt shit since. I doubt your thing is permanent, because glass clinging shouldn't be physically possible to damage your ears that much. If I were in your situation experiencing it though I would be worried and doubtful and depressed, but from an outside view I think you will be better. gl

Thank you for your kind words all.

It's been difficult to tell if there has been any improvement, since I've ran a fever for the past 5 days and I got an immediate spike in my right ear last night that hasn't subsided - which I believe to be due to the fever.

Have any of you any experience in this? Hopefully it will return to baseline! This thing can be relentless.

Unfortunately, the reality of tinnitus is that it one day it may stop improving.
Improvement is not a guarantee with tinnitus. A new baseline is always possible.
Personally I've had numerous permanent increases from kitchen mishaps.
On a more positive note, one day tinnitus does "max out", but this is usually at a pretty intolerable level.
Sorry for reality check.

I've had loads of loud noises that have made my ears worse. I always get anxious at the time but then just accept these things will happen. I once had a whole pallet of laboratory glassware crash onto a hard floor right behind me. It was horrendous and took me a while to get over it. With time we have to forget about it and move on. My tinnitus has got worse with time anyway. I don't expect it to get better. Just have to accept it for what it is and avoid loud noise where possible but accept the fact there will be sounds I'm exposed to that I can't avoid. I struggle to deal with these acoustic shocks but I am trying to remain more calm when it happens. Mindfulness has helped with my reaction to tinnitus.
Hope your T settles down and that you can move on from the incident quickly.
