Hello everyone, I hope you're managing well.

In February, I was prescribed 50 mg of Metoprolol daily for palpitations. It worked somewhat, but the dosage wasn't enough. When I went back to the cardiologist to request a higher dose, they instead prescribed 12.5 mg of Carvedilol twice a day.

At the time, I didn't know anything about this medication. Since I was in the clinic, I didn't think to ask whether it was ototoxic (though, to be fair, I doubt the nurse would have known). After I left, I came across a report suggesting that Carvedilol is the only beta blocker significantly associated with hearing loss.

I did some further research and found conflicting information. For starters, there are very few mentions of Carvedilol here or on /r/tinnitus. One of the few posts that does mention it links to a study in which, out of 48,155 people, only 162 (0.38%) reported tinnitus as a side effect.

I'm really confused about all of this and don't know which sources to trust.

For what it's worth, I didn't experience any tinnitus increases during my one month on Metoprolol, even though that drug is also listed as ototoxic.

I gave in. I got the pills after trying to do as much research as I could. There are very few anecdotal reports, which suggests that maybe the risk is not as common as I initially thought. I have decided to take the chance.

The PubMed article I found seemed to have several flaws in its study. It does not mention how long people were on Carvedilol, what their dosage was, or how many of them experienced ototoxic side effects. I am hoping for the best.
