Cause of Tinnitus
Scombroid food poisoning.
A friend of mine has completely lost all of her hearing and has extremely loud tinnitus after she was a little flu-ish for a long period. Both her eyes and all her sinuses were infection, and after having a distortion of sound she lost all of her hearing completely in the span of two days.

She is going to get two cochlear implants (CI's) and I wanted to ask the forum if anyone knows whether or not CI's help at all when you have complete and total hearing loss. She wouldn't hear a 140dB tone.
Can CI's help?

Has anyone else experienced tinnitus or hearing loss following an inflammation inside the head?
There is evidence mounting that this could be a real problem.

I lost all hearing in my left ear very suddenly and the doctors assume this was caused by a virus, though I did not feel sick prior to the hearing loss. I have tested twice for hearing aids but I actually heard less with the aids. This is because the amplification of sound also amplifies my tinnitus and recruitment/hyperacusis. I feel bad for your friend because she has no hearing now. My silver lining is good hearing in one ear. I certainly hope the CIs help her.

She sounds like a prime candidate for a CI. Those who have had normal hearing and speech in their life are the ones who respond to a CI best.

So that is the best thing I've read here. I'm (I hope) very far away from compelte hearing loss but it's great to know that I would be one of the people who respond best to CI's.
