Cause of Tinnitus
Noise Induced Hearing Loss
I'm almost at 6 months and a few months ago I had some hiss/static mixing in. The last couple months I've had mostly high pitched ringing with some crickets under the ringing in the mornings. The volume seems to be stabilizing or possibly going up a touch. The ringing isn't one tone but it's in the same area most of the time.

I'm wondering if the hiss static I had in the 3rd month was the initial variation of tinnitus. I've heard it can change quite a bit in the early stages.

So here's the question. How late can fading start or continue with tinnitus? I don't want to give up hope but it seems like I have to face some hard realities here.

3 months after that it becomes far difficult.

Define 'fading'. As in habituation Vs resolution of tinnitus?

I don't think a time frame has been established for tinnitus when it becomes 'permanent'.

The OP of the back to silence thread has habituated using his mindfulness method after suffering with t for over 4 decades, so I really don't think you have a reason to lose hope just yet.

5 years on, and I would consider myself habituated (with the help of stems)

I was talking to a girl last year with a history of congenital hearing loss and tinnitus. Later in life, she suffered a closed head injury and lost the remainder of her hearing. Her tinnitus completely disappeared! (not suggesting you try to replicate this though)

Have a look at the success stories on Tinnitus Talk. You will find many examples of people who have habituated or experienced either partial or complete resolution of tinnitus.

What was the cause of your tinnitus?

@DebInAustralia

I have noise induced t.

I've been looking at the success stories thread for information and spent the usual time on the forum as a newbie searching for hope. I sort of know the answer to my question but figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

All I can do is keep giving it time and let my body get used to it, aka habituate, or for it to get quieter.

The trend for many is that t gets quieter in time if loud situations are avoided. They say habituation takes 6-24 months. I sometimes wonder if getting used to it is from adjusting to the noise or the noise getting quieter so it can be adjusted to.

I literally believe fading of tinnitus has to do with GABA and how much hearing can be recovered.
I don't think it's something that just happens.
