Following up on my earlier thread: I have been on Ativan, 1 mg three times daily, for nearly three months now, and it is time to taper. My GI specialist thinks I am ready, but my psychiatrist does not agree. Regardless, I feel like I need to get this drug out of my system. I am showing signs of dependency, I don't think it is even working anymore, and I am experiencing what feel like withdrawal symptoms between doses.

It was prescribed to me in the ER on October 31. At first, it worked wonders; my anxiety disappeared instantly, and my tinnitus became much quieter. However, no one explained the potential long-term consequences of this drug.

To prepare me for tapering, we have tried various antidepressants to stabilize my mood, including Prozac, Remeron, and Trazodone. Unfortunately, Prozac and Remeron made my tinnitus significantly worse. I am still holding out hope that the extra "tones" caused by Remeron (Mirtazapine) will fade with time. Currently, I am on Trazodone, which is lightweight but has kept me relatively stable so far.

Initially, Ativan improved my condition by about 40–50%, but I was still a panicky, anxious mess throughout November. Things started to improve gradually, and now I would say my tinnitus is about 90% better than it was in October when it first started.

Now, I am looking for advice from others who have tapered off benzodiazepines for tinnitus. Is it best to taper very slowly? Did your tinnitus get better, worse, or stay the same during the process?

I would greatly appreciate hearing about your experiences. Any advice is welcome!
