Tinnitus Since
12/27/15
Hello, I am 17 years old. I have had bad ringing in my ear for a little over a week now, I went the the ent and got diagnosed with tinnitus.. I have been extremely depressed and can't think of how I'll be able to cope and live my whole life with this.. Do you get used to tinnitus with time, and does it stop bothering you at least? Is there any ways to stop the ringing, especially at night? If it stays like this forever I won't be able to take it. I've been crying all day, I don't know what to do or how to cope.. Please help

Hi Kelsie,

Welcome to the forum, sad to see new people joining though. Do you know the cause of your T?

You have every right to be angry, sad, depressed. But know that there is a good chance that it can go away by it's own. If it does not, the vast majority of people who develop T get used to it and live a normal life. It seems hard to believe when you just have T but it's the fact. Read about success stories instead of the disaster ones, the less you think about your T, the better it'll be. Keep yourself busy as much as possible.

As your onset is very recent, think about AM101 trials. It's an experimental drug that's injected into inner ears and believed to be working during the acute stage which is 3-6 months;

Also you can think about Prednisone, it's a steroid that's known to be effective against Tinnitus right after the onset;

You'll get out of this mood, believe me.

Thank you for the reply! Means a lot to get positive feedback to give me the strength to work through this, they do not really know the cause and assume it is noise induced because I am not old and no one in my family has it. I do listen to loud music and go to concerts frequently so that's most likely the cause, I'm just trying to stay positive but it is very hard. Hoping i get used to it or that it slowly fades away :/ @liquefact

@Kelsie Hi, Sorry for what you've been going through. How did you get it? Please take care of your ears. Avoid loud sounds. I was a mess when I got it. Really bad. Not kiddin. Now I'm so much better. You will get used to it and you won't even notice it most of the time. It was the worse thing I ever went through but now I'm fine. Hang in there. Use something to mask the T at night so you can get some sleep. That's really important. I didn't sleep for 3 days at all .. Maybe an hour here and there. Take deep breaths , go for walks and relax.......

@Kelsie,

If you use earbuds, dump them! Even at what you think is a low volume, it probably isn't. No loud music, parties, etc. Did you have an audiogram done at the ENT's office? Do you have hearing loss? Did they prescribe an 8 day tapered course of Prednisone?

Don't forecast the future just yet. You maybe lucky and only have temporary T. Be positive and baby your ears for awhile.

@Sailboardman i did, they said my ears looked perfect. No hearing loss, no liquid in my middle ear, and no they did not. They basically told me there's nothing I can do, just learn to adapt to it, they said it is possible that it will go away, they just can't give
Me anything to cure it

Welcome to the forum, @Kelsie. Being young with T may actually help you or your brain to adapt to it better. Don't project the future based on your worst moment. It never happens that way for most people. They get better over time, and young people seems even more adaptable than older folks. Here are some young people who are young or at college. They suffered much like you initially but did get better and wrote their success stories. Here are some a few samples:

I have been extremely depressed and can't think of how I'll be able to cope and live my whole life with this..

I was in your position a couple of weeks ago with exactly the same thoughts.

I have just started being able to live a normal life again, being happy, thinking normal thoughts and not always worrying about my T. It's still there, but I notice it a lot less, and if I notice it, it doesn't get an emotional response from me.

It is extremely likely that you will habituate to your tinnitus, just hang in there and take it one hour, one day at a time.

Try not to measure your tinnitus levels and pitch, just try not to analyse it at all. If you find yourself thinking that way, try to mentally block it out. Try to distract yourself, keep as busy as possible and don't spend too much time sitting alone in quiet rooms for now. It doesn't seem like it now, but things get better.

Hi Kelsie,

Be positive / you are very young and so your inner ear cells....
I know stories of people who recovery from T after some time/ all you have to do now is give yourself a chance to recovery....the first T symptoms is a "warning" that your ears send to you like "We need some silence now"...

Very important: (as somebody else told you here) Stay away from loud noises (in special loud music....and i know its not easy to avoid listen our best tunes but....) otherwise the chances to have permanent T will increase much.
Also if i was you i would make a healthy diet based on natural antioxidants and proteins (helps a lot to enhance ATP levels - energy currency of cells involved in many cellular processes).

Take care! Wish your best recovery!
Cheers

Thank you all, I am trying but it is very hard. Nothing I miss more than coming home and relaxing to a nice silent home... Feeling sad I won't have that anymore

Hi kelsie,
I know you are young to have tinnitus but you will learn to cope with it better in time and still a chance it will go.
Someone once told me they think of their ears as singing ears and it helps her deal with it better .
I say its my naughty monkeys doing my nut in and can't wait put my hearing aids in .
Tinnitus is hard when it invades our quiet time and robs us of silence but we do adapt and life gets better .
Keep posting for support and know your tinnitus family are only a click away on here..lots of love glynis

My condolences. I'm going through the same now (just started a few days ago following an acoustic trauma). I feel the same as you do, I don't know if I could deal with it being this loud permanently.
