Noise Exposure (Headphones)
Most people aren't used to the sound of air raid sirens. I am acquainted with them almost daily where I live. I live in the greater metropolitan of one of the largest cities in USA. The city is surrounded for miles by small townships that all merge into each other.

Each township has its own fire department, regardless of how small the township is. Each fire station has air raid sirens directly above it to call in volunteer firefighters.

Like I said, these go off daily, sometimes more than once, for at max 3 sets of 30 second sirens with 3-5 minutes in between.

The closest air raid siren is 0.5 miles from me. The sirens do not give me trouble though I usually get up out of bed to stay in the bathroom if they go off. Sometimes they wake me up, sometimes not. I certainly wouldn't want to have my windows open when they go off though. They usually only go off at night. But more rarely they can go off during the day too.

The apartment I am moving to is 0.3 miles away (as opposed to 0.5). This is using google maps so a straight line from the fire station to my apartment.

Any idea if this will be harmful to me?

I don't think so, but wouldn't hurt to have a pair of ear muffs ready if they do cause you any issue.

I live in a similar area and I haven't had problems.

Always do. Right next to my bedside in case the fire alarm goes off. (And that's not paranoia talking. The building fire alarm has gone off multiple times and I had my ear muffs handy each time)

I just don't want to be sleeping with ear muffs on.

The stress and paranoia just isn't worth it, some days you just might be too tired or stress without having to worry about running into the bedroom to look for your ear muffs

I live near tornado sirens that go off every week during the warm season for 1 minute. From my experience, they aren't loud unless you are really close to them. You should be fine.

Would be nice if you had a chance to spenda a day in the "0.3 miles" apartment and just see what it would be like..

Remember
"The sound level will decrease by 6 dB every time the source to the listener's distance is doubled."
because of the dB things.. though there are trees and buildings etc to messing up the math calculations.

Well, the good news is, I measured wrong the first time on Google maps. Both buildings are actually exactly 0.4 miles away from the fire station. I'm super excited now. Further away from the train tracks, smaller more laid back community, second floor, there won't be a literal parking spot directly outside my window, farther away from the flight paths.
Hopefully I don't have any trouble getting up the stairs. I didn't during our visit at least.

its hard to say but I installed custom sound barriers for my bedroom windows making my bedroom the safe room from noise. if you find the sirens are too loud and you cant move anywhere else, then it's a possible solution for you to consider.

I've heard people do this in apartments. Those are big modifications. Like...where in the heck do you people live that allows you to do that?! I have never seen an apartment that would allow it. They'll tear into you for putting contact paper in the kitchen cabinets!

the place I use, you order the barrier and it come with these hook type mounts and you can hang the barrier onto it. so you can freely remove it at any time. It's like hanging a painting.
