My cousin states that when she gets really stressed for college finals she can sometimes get tinnitus...

And after the tinnitus goes away when she no longer stresses out. Can this be true? I've never heard of that....

That can absolutely be true. I have a good friend that has the same thing happen -- tinnitus when she is overly stressed and tired.

I sometimes wonder if tinnitus is always there but whether or not we hear it depends on the brain and it's ability to turn it off. I know quite a few people who hear tinnitus before falling asleep at night or when they first wake up. They do not hear it during the day, even in quiet rooms.

yes I wonder now too, does that mean it's the brain signaling sounds?

I can believe it. I suspect that she may have auditory system damage and very minor tinnitus, though. Our society is LOUD. Normal isn't always healthy.
