Hi all,

I am living in the perfect storm. My T is worse after a medication botch up last xmas and now our baby has turned 1.
Like any 1 year old she has taken to squealing, crying, yelling, banging, crashing and all the other noises 1 year olds make.
My life has been completely destroyed by T. I've had it nearly 30 years but over the last 8-10 years it has been progressively worse. I still have a job but it and my marriage are hanging by a string. The days are long, hard and exchausting.

I am now thinking I need to move out as the constant noise in our house is driving me nuts but just the thought of Not being with the kids make me want to cry.

I have suffered and lost so much its sole destroying and there isn't much hope, I just learned the only neuromonics clinic here in New Zealand no longer exists. I have been waiting nearly a year to get back to the spealist who made this whole thing worse last xmas but still no word.

Has anybody found themselves in a similar situation. I just don't know what to do.

Jamie

Sorry to hear about your struggle with T. Have you tried to use earplugs to insulate your ears from the noises? If you can't use the full foam plugs because you have to interact with your kid, perhaps get the musician earplugs which blocks the extreme range but still allow some sounds to come through. If you wish to try it, here is one on Amazon.com:

You can also do masking in general, or try DIY ACRN which is free. Here are some masking suggestions:

1) Mask at bed time so you can sleep better. Find whatever sounds/music that are soothing to you. You can use a sound machine or sound pillow for this, or a computer with speakers.

2) If you need masking on the go, try load an ipod with nature sounds or music using itune. If you have a smart phone, you can download free APPs for soothing or T-masking sounds.

3) If you have computer and speakers, you can try these excellent masking sounds too:

TT's audio player: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/audioplayer/

or this online sound library, particularly the self-mix nature sounds: http://mynoise.net/

or download free sound generator 'aire freshener': http://www.peterhirschberg.com/mysoftware.html

or search youtube with words like 'tinnitus masking sounds', 'white noise', 'rain sound' etc.

And if you need DIY notched Acoustic Coordinated Reset Neuromodulation (ACRN):
(please be careful and research the pro and con on ACRN before proceeding with caution)

just keep a pair of good ear muffs at home - like the Peltor x5am those only cost 25 USD - and cut noise very well, and put those one whenever you need to get close to your kid..a lot easier than sticking plugs in and out all the time

You don't want to leave your kids over this stupid tinnitus. I have a 4 month old who cries super loudly. I have to put ear plugs in when she cries. What have you tried? Maybe there are some more things you can try. Don't give up!

@Jamie I'm sorry your T has worsened. Does you spouse understand what you are going through? How was your T over 10 years ago? I agree with @billie48, you should mask your T as much as possible. From your home to your work if possible. It helps me a lot. Do you wear hearing aids? They could possibly help mask your T.

I really hope for the best. I hope you adapt, although slowly and even when when you take 1, 2, 3, 10 steps back don't stop moving foward. Congrats on your 1 year-old! Wear ear muffs or cut some foam plus in half. I do this to for quick protection since I work in a loud environment.

I have hyperacusis and my 7 year old loves playing the recorder with her mum and they gave me a special personal concert today. Oh the joy of those high squeaks that only a recorder can make. I was nearly in tears of joy all the way through it. I can't wait for the next impromptu jam session! *bites hand*

Hi Enrique, thanks for the reply.

My spouse doesn't really understand, every time I bring it up it ends up in an argument, she has to do more now and I think she feels a bit hard done by, I wouldn't be surprised if it all ends, I'm not the man I used to be.

I've ordered some musicians earplugs, I hope to wear them so I can go places that I used too with the kids.

I tried hearing aids last year but they didn't make much difference.

I used to work in noisey environments too, I was an industrial electrician, at the top of my game, the sky was the limit, now I'm stuck in an office, it sucks, what do you do?
