Flue and Ear Infection
Hey everyone,

I wanted to share the treatment I'm currently trying for my tinnitus (Warning: This is self medication). My tinnitus started a year ago after an ear infection, and I felt a lot of fluid inside my eardrum—like I was underwater. That's when the real struggle began. The first time I went to the emergency room, they gave me prednisolone and some antibiotics (not sure which ones).

After two or three terrible weeks—missing work and battling both tinnitus and depression—the sound finally started to decrease. During this time, I saw an ENT, but all he gave me was a pamphlet on "How to Live with Tinnitus" (not very helpful). Later, I went to my GP, and he prescribed me another round of steroids, which actually helped a lot at that time.

After six months, my tinnitus became manageable—almost unnoticeable during the day, though still present at night and in quiet moments, causing some insomnia. Over time, I learned to accept it, and after a year, I was living a mostly normal life.

But two days ago, everything changed. I was playing Counter-Strike with headphones, had a few pints of beer, and ate some spicy food. I don't know which one triggered it, but I had one of the worst spikes in the last eight months.

Luckily, I had some medications I had brought from Brazil (I live in Dublin now) for emergencies. As soon as the spike hit, I took 40 mg of Prednisolone and 20 mg of Betahistine Dihydrochloride. I've been following this regimen:
  • Prednisolone: 60 mg per day for 3 days, then 40 mg for another 2 days.
  • Betahistine: 10 mg, three times a day.
And here's the crazy part—my tinnitus has never been this quiet in the last 12 months. It feels amazing to experience silence again. I know this is likely temporary and will return once I stop the steroids, but I wanted to share my experience.

Has anyone else tried something similar? Would love to hear your thoughts! I'll keep you guys updated on how things go.
