Cause of Tinnitus

hi all,
I will try to introduce myself but English is not my first language so I hope my writing makes sense :).
My name is Ann, 40 years old and mother of 2. Last januari I was very ill, got pneumonia and had to stay in the hospital for 5 days on iv antibiotics. During that time I also had a couple of MRI's and it turned out I had Crohn's disease. I was pretty ill. That time I noticed my ear being 'plugged' (is that the righr word?) and went to the doctor about that. I got prednison but it didn't help. I developed HYperacisis and tinnitus. A loud and low sort of humming in my left ear. A month later my other ear started.... sort of low beeps....
It's really anoying, very loud en several hights. (Like some sort of realy lame melody).

The weird thing is, when I close my right ear, the humming in the left ear stops. Same with sound.... sound (for exemple a phone) to my right ear, the humming left stops.

I have tried a lot of things.... meditating, accupuncture, aps therapy, zinc, magnesium, and a lot of other stuff.... nothing helps and it seems to only get worse.

I tried a Dutch forum about Tinnitus and hyperacusis, but there's not much activity, end so I ended up here. I think this is a very nice forum with people that try to help each other without hate.

Thanx! Very helpfull indeed!
The thing I find very odd is that when I shake my head, the humming/buzzing 'shakes along'. It sounds like the noise is actually made by my ears if you know what I mean.... I know the theory about the brain making rhe noise, therefor I don't understand this....

Does anyone recognise this?

Nobody??

I have been reading this forum almost every day for the past 18 months, and I have never heard of anyone describing what you described above...

I think I have something similar to that, sometimes the slightest movements seem to have an impact on my tinnitus. This could mean that your tinnitus is somatic.

Somatic tinnitus
  • "is clinically observed modulation of the pitch and loudness of tinnitus by somatic stimulation" (source)
  • face, jaw and neck movements change someone's tinnitus either by making it worse (louder, different pitch, new tone) or making it better (quieter, softer)
Treatments you could try
  • TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
  • Using a mouthguard if you grind your teeth at night
  • Seeing a physical/massage therapist if you have issues with your neck, jaw or cervical spine
  • Using White Noise Generators, listening to white noise during the day and at night
  • Antidepressants or benzodiazepines might be helpful

Thanx voor your answer.... I'm not completely sure. My tinnitus can not be changed by movements. It's just that when I shake my head, it's like a 'woosh woosh' sound....
sounds weird I know :).
I also think It's kind of weird that the sound is in my LEFT ear, and when I completely close my RIGHT ear the sound is practically gone. When I close the right ear (the one with the noise) the noise stays the same....
The same with sound.... for example a phone.... when I have the phone to the RIGHT ear, the humming LEFT stops. When I have the phone to my left ear, the humming goes on.
