Cause of Tinnitus
Gunshot
Hello all,

I have been browsing this forum for almost 3 months now, mainly in the research news section. I am 31 and have had tinnitus since early January of this year. It was brought on by being an unwilling participant of gunfire. A 12 gauge shotgun went off ~10 feet from my head. I have hearing loss in the high frequency range, I do not have H and have mild to low tinnitus. It normally does not bother me on a day to day basis and never has expect for the initial onset and most days I don't hear it.

I will also add that my tinnitus it pure tonal, the only thing I hear when I do hear it is the sound of an old TV when its been on for to long. The best I can describe it is a high pitched "eeeeeeeee".

Hi Ersatz,

Welcome to the site!

Based on your description, it appears lady luck was on your side that day - you were not maimed or killed AND you "got off lightly" in terms of tinnitus.

I beleive a lot of times with time tonal changes to hiss, i beleive because some DB un hearing was "repaired" but nerves did not and you get hiss (pitch varies too)
