Cause of Tinnitus
Medication induced/anxiety
Hello all!
I am barely new to tinnitus. It all started when I was pressured into seeing a MD over my anxiety. I am 23 years old and have excellent hearing. Never have taken medication for anxiety before, but with my stressful job (I am a nurse) and moving away from my family my doctor thought it would be good for me to try Wellbutrin. I was on for 4-5 days with the T started. I stopped taking it the next day it started and was told after a few days it should subside. Well the T is still there after 5-6 weeks. It's not noticeable when I'm talking or when my tv is on at a decent sound level but my anxiety and fear of the tinnitus being permanent is really making me go crazy. I've been trying to read positive posts over tinnitus and came across this website. I went to ENT Doctor who basically said there was nothing I could do about my tinnitus, my hearing was normal and she suggested maybe I try a tinnitus clinic. I'm here looking for support and to maybe see a positive outlook on this. I've been mourning my old self and I just want to know if it gets better. Has anyone's tinnitus ever went away completely? Or has anyone gotten tinnitus after taking Wellbutrin? My tinnitus is constant and almost sounds as high pitched as a dog whistle.

Welcome.

Welcome and surely you will get good support from caring members here. To get a positive outlook, there is nothing better than reading the success stories as many as you can, and also the Positivity Thread on the main support forum. Wellbutrin does have tinnitus listed as one of the side effects. Hopefully your T will fade as time moves on. If you have a dog whistle T, then your T is like mine. But I also had severe hyperacusis on top of T. Perhaps you can read up my success story where I listed some helpful strategies to deal with my ultra high pitch T & severe H. Take care. God bless.

Hey there,

welcome to this wonderful community :)

Some medications, do cause tinnitus. it might take quite awhile for it to get lower and hopefully go away. Don't panic about it. I know this is something new and very odd, but it is not the end of the world. I have full blown tinnitus that is extremely loud, yes its super loud and i don't wish it on anyone. I went to a party and they had the PPV boxing fight on, if i can go to such an environment with people jumping up and down and screaming, then you will be ok.

tinnitus is all about mentality, yes it sucks, yes it is horrible but there is life and it is still beautiful. I cant hear all that well anymore cuz my tinnitus is super loud, i will ask people to repeat themselves...there is no shame in it at all :)

try to be positive about it, it could get better or it could go away. Be positive regardless and just give it 3-6 months and see how you feel...

be blessed...

I do know of someone who developed tinnitus due to a medication and it eventually subsided.

I know it is a very stressful time for you at this moment. I'm sure you're on edge and spend most of your time wondering when/if it will go away. I hope in your case it does resolve and your life quickly returns to normal. However, just so you know, it is possible to develop tinnitus and live a normal, happy life.

I'd say at this point anything is possible regarding whether it stays or goes, but your job at this moment is to pause, take a deep breath, and not let your fear and anxiety get the best of you. Tinnitus or not... you will be OK.

Yes, any anti anxiety drug can cause this as I found out with low dose Seroquel for insomnia- am trying to quit the Seroquel now and will see what happens- but somehow I dont think the tinnitus will ever go away
