Where to find tinnitus and Prednisone expert?

After 10+ years of SEVERE tinnitus 65+dB 24/7 trying everything available to no avail, I was waken in the night by SILENCE. I laid there listening to my dog breathing under the bed and faint sounds of wind out my window! NO ringing, whistling or crickets could be heard! Have I died? It almost seemed the silence was painful.

Earlier I was prescribed a 4 day tapered course of Prednisone (40mg, 20mg, 10mg, 10mg) for the treatment of a bacterial lung/respiratory infection along with an antibiotic. I took the 40mg Prednisone about 1pm and the antibiotic at 7pm. After going to bed at 11pm I was awaken at 2am with SILENCE.

Along with the silence was a pillow bloodied from a tricking nose bleed from both nostrils. With confusion from silence I showered to wash the blood from my face and the bleeding stopped. The silence lasted for about 4 hours and then tinnitus returned louder. I also had typical side effects for prednisone for days indicating toxicity.

Prednisone may have silenced my tinnitus unfortunately it was toxic for me.

I can't help but wonder if... tolerating the side effects of a prolonged and stronger course of Prednisone is worth the risk.
Perhaps injecting Prednisone in ear as studied.

Finding knowledgeable help has been impossible!

What is the cause of your tinnitus?

Prednisone strong indeed. Speaking to a pharmacist about the reported doses to relieve tinnitus 60mg daily is so toxic I would be dead in 6 months. If 6 months of silence assured it would be tempting.

The available reports are so limited and contradictory it all seems pointless.

The cause of my tinnitus is LIFE, and collecting sport concussions like trading cards in HS, loving rock&roll too loud, Too cool for ear protection in military, treated by Benzodiazepines for decades till side affect became unbearable and suicidal. After stopping all medications 10+ years ago, side affects gone but for my tinnitus worse than ever at 55-65+ dB 24/7 with hyperacusis unrelenting sucking the life from me.

I'm currently on a 5 day prednisone taper dose (2nd day today). 3 hours after popping two of the tiny pills my T was practically gone. All that's left is a slight buzzing sound. I've also noticed about a 5% improvement in hearing in my bad ear. The only side affects I have from this drug is insomnia which is why I'm writing this at 1:30am. I was prescribed this for a mild outer ear irritation that left my good ear with this muffled sensation. The drug has had a positive effect on that as well as my tinnitus but I'm sure it's temporaty. This is a very powerful and toxic drug with many negative long term side effects if taken for a prolonged period. It's relatively safe short-term.

@Nick M @Jelli If prednisolone quietens your tinnitus, then yours may be linked to inflammation.
I recommend giving curcumin a go. I found prednisolone also quietened mine, but obviously it's not a sustainable solution. I tried curcumin (with Piperine) and this has helped to quieten my tinnitus down. There is definitely an inflammatory link to mine.

Thanks Samantha. I think it is as well. I'll give that a try after this prednisone taper

I think mine is linked to inflammation as well. I've had some very quiet days a couple high-pitched days. I'm taking Curcumin and two doses of quercetin and bromelain daily - both are nature's anti-inflammatories. Along with Omega-3, Vit C.

I've tried hot-sauce with meals to clear out my sinus' which i suspected could be a contributing factor. But that's when the T seems to be getting higher pitch and more noticeable.

I'm just curious how people the take Corticosteroids find relief. It seems to me that if it's damage that caused the T, then steroids wouldn't make any difference, but if it's inflammation, then it would make a difference.

This leads me to my next assumption, if it's inflammation then there are multiple causes for systemic inflammation. One allergies and gut health. Which both can be life-long if not addressed.

So question: Is chronic T actually chronic inflammation? If so, then leaky gut could be a factor in long term T.

Many other life-long conditions are linked to chronic inflammation, so one would think that people with T may also have other conditions or symptoms of systemic inflammation.

Off the top of my head, high blood pressure, arthritis, joint pain - swelling, heart disease, eczema, the list goes on and on... so perhaps T is another off-shoot from those conditions.

Being an optimist, I feel addressing the other conditions may also address T as well.

Mine was originally diagnosed as either Meniere's or ETD after seeing an Emerg doc due to vertigo one day after a concussion. My ears were impacted, and I had a bad cold about a month before. Note that T. did not show up until 3 weeks later after that meeting. I was originally on Mometasone, but now on Budenoside. I met with a concussion doctor a couple of days ago and the side that has T. also has an inflamed eustachian tube. I also suffer from frequent bouts of lung infections. I also drink apple cider vinegar with honey, on zinc, magenesium, gingko biloba, and B12. In addition I have a Mabis Steamer Inhaler and use patchouli, lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, and spearmint oils. I also sometimes just use the steam itself. Good news is that I am in my 5th day of relative low tinnitus. I believe all of these are helping alleviate the symptoms. My concussion doc says I'm making great progress and says I have a 50/50 chance of eliminating it totally.

That's a good idea, I'm going to try that to clear my sinuses. Fortunately my T has usually been very mild - most noticeable at night - that's another reason I suspect inflammation link, since it's more time of day related and comes and goes in severity - which is how inflamation works as well.

I'm actually opposite, it doesn't bother me much at nite, mostly mornings and generally clears up in the afternoon. Mine is mild too. I have a confirmed eustachian tube infection on the same side as the T.

Glad you're doing better Samantha. Could you tell me your dosage per day and if your curcumin is different than turmeric curcumin? I'm currently taking a methylprednisone 4mg taper pack and am on day 3.

I'm no scientist but according to WebMD, "Prednisone is a corticosteroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. It also suppresses the immune system."

What if your tinnitus is caused by inflammation and you could try another anti-inflammatory supplement?

I heard Curcumin when combined with black pepper is a powerful anti-inflammatory and has helped lower some people's tinnitus. Have you tried this?
