Prednisone? Will I Be Given It and Is It Too Late?

Hi, have been reading loads on here, some good advice.

I have read Predison can help in early diagnosis, I think I have had this ringing now for 4 days, I am going to the docs again tomorrow and will tell them I have shooting pains and bad headaches in my head, so they fast track me to see a specialist, they originally said 47 days which is an absolute joke! I hope they get it to see just how bad it is.

Can I ask for predison and will it work? What can I expect if I get it? What criteria do I need to fulfil to get it? (like how bad do you need to be for the docs to give me it).

This is still crazy, I can't believe I have this ringing, I have not been to a loud club or gig for a long time. Though it could be physical induced.

So please will Predison get rid of it if I have had this ringing for 4 days or so?

I decided to pay for a private consultation myself and I was seen 2 or 3 days after I booked. I was never offered prednisone from any of the Drs I saw, I even asked but was told there would be no benefit. I was basically refused. In my experience it is next to impossible in the UK to get emergency ear care. The day after my spike I went to A&E and waited over 3 hours just to be told to go home. I felt as though I was just in the way of the real patients. As for getting prednisone in the tight window of opportunity for it to have an effect, you've got almost no chance in the UK as it stands.

You may have better luck than me but it's likely to be too late to have any effect now anyway. By the time you get to see an ENT it's going to have been over a week so it's unlikely to help you. I'd concentrate on eating well, keeping healthy and getting yourself into a private practise to rule out any treatable causes.

How big is this 'window of opportunity' you say?

What possible treatable causes? I was going to ask the doc that despite her saying there is nothing in my ear that I wanted her to 'de wax' or whatever the term is?

Is this a good idea?

There's not much hard data on prednisone. Best I can tell it's most effective in the fist 24-48 hours, and probably only effective at a week at most. I took it almost 1 week after my trauma and it did nothing for me. In my case I really believe it could have helped early on as my tinnitus set in days after the trauma and not immediately.

Prednisone itself is far from a silver bullet, it's more an issue of there is no other treatment and it may help so why not try it.

@needtostop, Prednisone is basically a temporary masker and anti inflammatory. After it wears off, you'll still be left with T, as per my experience with it.

I took an injection and an 8 day tapered course of Prednisone about two weeks after the onset of SSHL and initially, I heard silence and thought I was cured. Not so, after treatment, T came back to stay. I even took .5mg of Prednisone every 6 hours for months, with limited success. After getting the Prednisone shakes and multiple side effects, I stopped.

Give it a shot anyway, we're all different when it comes to meds. Good luck!

A private consultation is only around £150-£200. If you're concerned it's the only way you'll get seen to quickly. Once you've seen the ENT, treatment can be offered through the NHS. You can't just demand a drug, it's up to the Dr if he wants to give it you or not.

Treatable causes include:

Inflammation or blockage of your Eustachian tubes because of allergies or possible sinus infection.

Inner or middle ear infection.

Fluid behind the ear drum, or compacted wax in the ear canal.

High blood pressure and/or a vascular issue in the ear.

Excessive stress, putting strain on CNS (producing too much cortisol).

Barotrauma or pressure imbalance.

Acoustic neuroma (very rare and usually in one ear). MRI needed

Yea, I paid for a consultation and only received an audiogram. I went in there clued up so asked for prednisone but wasn't offered it. I didn't even get a tympanometry. I still haven't had an MRI or further tests to investigate, in fact I going back to see someone else because I want other causes to be ruled out. I'm on a steroid nasal spray for bad allergies and I want to rule out any Eustachian tube problems. I would also like an MRI.

Who even carries Prednisone around with them, and who even knows what the symptoms are that would mean you take it (should you just happen to be carrying it around).

That seems to be the case as far as I've read. The problem we have in the UK is there is practically zero chance of you getting access to any prednisone in 24-48 hours. A&E will most likely turn you away, and GP waiting times can be 3 weeks over here unless you get an emergency appointment. You would then need an ENT referral to get the drug and they take months. Even a private appointment is going to take at least a few days to a few weeks.

It's just too hard to get prednisone that quickly. In my case it was IMPOSSIBLE. I tried everything in my power.

Well, it can possibly reverse hearing loss, but there's no guarantee, it will cure Tinnitus.

Of course, you may have specific examples or case studies proving this and then I will stand corrected.

Like I said, he should give it a shot and see what happens?

Let's assume it could be one of these, and I get seen in 5 days time, (9/10 days with T) can I still be cured or sorted?? How far is too far?>?

I agree. I was a regular church goer, now with H and reactive T I cannot bear the noise of worship, something I loved. How can a God inflict something that keeps his parishioners away.
Thats my question. Please don't anybody get into a debate about the devil etc. Its just my feeling on things.
