Whilst targeted at those with autism, this is good news for those of us who also suffer with hyperacusis and tinnitus:

"Supermarket chain Morrisons has introduced a weekly "quieter hour" for autistic shoppers who struggle with music and noise.

Its UK stores will dim lights, turn music off, avoid using the tannoy and turn check-out beeps down on Saturdays from 09:00 to 10:00.

The movement of trolleys and baskets will also be reduced, it says."

This is a great idea, but is one hour long enough for all shoppers to shop and check out before the circus starts up again? Hopefully they will get a positive response and increase the quieter hours.

I do wonder why it can't be quieter all the time. Are there people who feel the need for noise and chaos? I realize there are hearing impaired people, but how much of the noise in the supermarket do hearing impaired people need? Not the music. Not the crashing carts. Not the god-awful check-out beeps.

Maybe it should be quieter most of the time with designated cacophony times for people who need loud noise.

I just decided to move to the UK. Can you guys handle another yank?

It's a step in the right direction though. And hopefully with more and more incremental steps such as these, we will get to a place where we have quieter hours or quiet shopping experiences as the norm.

@SugarMagnolia is right in that so much of the noise is unnecessary. It's ok to cater for the hearing impaired, but don't impair the hearing of other whilst doing so!
