Cause of Tinnitus
Virus/Allergies
If you have ringing and got a very blocked/dry nose around the same time it started or somewhere down the line, don't worry. While I'm no medical professional I can safely say it will go away. See your doctor, they will likely recommend nasal spray, decongestant medication, etc. Ask them what the best options are for your case and don't just listen to what people say online, people online are often paranoid and don't listen to their doctors. Only use the medication your doctor recommends. Doctor may recommend a CT scan and hearing test (a formality usually) and if it's just a sinus thing the CT will show that the eustachian tube is a bit blocked with fluid and is irritated. Doctor will probably then tell you keep using the medication and the ringing will go away, it does.

Remember there is no set time limit. Don't listen to people online that say "I've had it for X months and it's still here, I think I have to accept it for life now". Don't listen to these silly paranoid people that make statements with no proof and only speculation. Following your doctor's instructions will put you at ease. If you are having trouble sleeping due to ringing and you have a cold or sinus thing, ignore it and start the treatment options, relax and enjoy your day. :) Ask the doctor about the Valsalva maneuver (Pinch and blow), mine said it's safe and to do it about 5 times a day gently but see what yours says for your case. Don't push as hard as you can and really only a complete nut would blow so hard to do any damage so don't worry about that and again, listen to what your doctor says. Remember that while the technical term for ringing in the ears is tinnitus, don't say to yourself "Oh no I have tinnitus!" Call it temporary ringing until you have all the facts, calling it tinnitus can make it seem scarier than it is and encourage silly thoughts.

Don't worry if the medication seems to be doing nothing at the start, it takes time and there's no set amount of time of when it should work, ask your doctor how long you should be using each type of medication for. Once again, stop worrying and enjoy yourself! If you are taking action and seeing your doctor, making the relevant appointments, etc there's no need to beat yourself up! You didn't do anything wrong! Relax man! :)

Well I go see the Dr on Monday 5-5-18.I have been diagnosed with a middle ear infection. When I went to the ER they gave me prednisone and allegra d cant taje either one. So now I am just taking claritin 10mg. not as bad side effects. So I am anxious I didnt have a primary Dr when this started so thats why I went to ER. So now I have to wait to see a Dr. The ringing is insessant. I have a hard time eating its affected my sleep and I get panicky.

They also said I had cronic sinusitus. So I am hopeful that what you say is true. My nasal passages were blocked and very dry. I am hopibg my Dr. visit will help me get better!

My sinus related (ETD) tinnitus went away after 5 and a half months. Most such csases resolve after some monthes. Stay possitive and resume your favorite activities as soon as you feel better.

I've had ringing for 6 months now, I've always had bad allergies.

My ears have been feeling full since the tinnitus started, it just happened one morning.
I recently went to the ENT again and he said by the hearing test I had back December that I had Eustachian tube dysfunction and that's why my ears have been feeling full and can hurt. I'm on nose spray now it's helped with my ears feeling more open but the ringing in still there and loud. The ENT said he didn't know if the ringing is caused by this or not.

I was on Prednisone back in January but it didn't help with the ringing either.
I'm about to give up, I just want it to go away!

thanks to all for positive stories!!
and for those still suffering i wish all the best..

mine t came with being sick + have allergies and it is much better after 2 months...
one of my eustacian tubes was blocked for a month and my hearing way worse on the side but returned completly.
t in one ear is gone for 90% of the time and on the other side it is much better..
anyway, today i have such a headache and my nose is closing due to allergies all the time... but my ears are doing fine, very quiet, only a bit of t.. anyway i really hope that our bodies heal from this.. it is so inconvenient that allergies and viruses happen at the same time in feb and march - at least for some of us..

Thanks for this thread. I've only been dealing with this for a little over a week. I have my first appt with the ENT tomorrow and I'm nervous. Getting very little support from my husband and feeling very alone. Trying to stay positive.

Did you a Neti pot or Nasal Irrigation during this time? I had bad sinus congestion for 6 months. I started getting the Tinnitus I noticed after using the Neti pot. Felt like there was water in my ears. Also, do you have the name of the sprays you used? Thanks for the positive share!

i have one question for etd/allergy/tinnitus sufferers - does the aera under the ear (on the upper neck just under the ear(s)) hurt a bit if you press (even gently) on it with your fingers? mine still does...it was all swallen back at the end of feb feb/march .. now it does not look as swallen as before, maybe a bit, but it still hurts and feels different as on the good ear side..

(the question above was not for me as i understand but nevertheless just for having more information on the page - i did not use a neti pot or simmilar, i use nasonex, olynth, and sometimes: allergodil, salt spray, inhalation)

@lena_ , interesting, I have similar type of pain: not painful at all in fact, but I feel like some king of pressure is applied there. It is below the ear, right at the junction between the jaw and upper neck. It is also on the upper neck area next to this junction. I get it less and less often and the days when I feel like I am getting a cold feeling low it comes back... I have T from sinusitis as well.

how about when you tap it. is it like tapping on a microphone?

that is interesting indeed! totally the same situation.. it was much worse a month ago, it is getting better,
it still hurts when cold air (wind outside) gets there, i always have to wear a scarf even though it is really warm outside already...

it was like tapping on a microfone before when all was really swollen...now not anymore...

No, also this pain is not constant, just a few times a day, usually in the evening/night during small intervals like 10 seconds.

I never had it swollen myself and I must say anytime it happened I never felt like tapping it, I guess I am not very curious ;)
Also, interestingly, I have T only from left ear (as far as I understand and feel...) but this type of pain I feel it under both ears and mostly the right ear which I always find odd. Sometimes I feel my T is coming from my brain but mostly I feel it comes from left. It clearly started from left for me. Only I had the feeling I perceived it from the right ear.
At some point I thought it was coming from the Valerian root tea I drink every evening to relax. I stopped and it was still there so it can't be.

I will have had tinnitus for 2 years come next month due to a very bad viral infection, went virtually deaf in my left ear for weeks along with screaming tinnitus, absolutely done my head in for a long long time, tried a lot of different things over the past 2 years with no success. I have all the symptoms of etd, have lots of crackling all the time and they block up quite often (only for a minute or 2) which never used to happen. I still have hope that one day I'll come across something that will stop or at least reduce it but one thing I stopped doing was obsessing over it, the ringing in my ear is extremely loud at all times I can hear it over everything except in the shower but only if I want to hear it, I've pretty much gotten to the point were I can block it out as if its not there, I go most of the day without hearing it and I'll be honest I never thought it was possible I spent a very long time depressed until I decided to try and remove the negavite thoughts from it and it has worked a lot better than I could ever imagine. Basically what I'm saying is, if you are in the situation i was in and you feel like giving up and nothing is working, it will get better but it is up to you to make it better and trust me I know exactly how hard it can be, it completely destroyed my life for over a year but once I gave up searching and obsessing for something to work the only option I had was to mentally block it out, I can honestly say having tinnitus has made me a lot stronger and I hope everyone else struggling can make it through like I did because i know it's possible

I think I may have something similar. Is it normal to have muffled hearingg on the ear. It's like lower noises(bass) arent heard well anymore
