Why is it that as conscientious as we are in protecting our hearing, something will always come out and bite us.

I returned from a night shift this morning and went to remove my plugs for a bit to give my ears a break. As I did, the neighbour opposite me began some high pitched sawing. The windows were open at the far end of the room I was in as well (wife opened them before she left for work).

I popped the plugs back in and was exposed for around 30 seconds, but it's enough to ruin the day and be all I think about, along with monitoring for spiking (slight spike now). My ears hadn't a chance to even adjust to the new noise levels without the plugs.

This ailment really is an all-consuming b*stard!

It's life brother! We can do our best to protect our ears and new noises might pop up at any time. They are doing a remodeling of the supermarket and they got saws and electric tools. I make sure I keep my ear plugs ready, because it can get loud....

Keep moving forward!!!!

Do you have hyperacusis?

Likely, considering I have overprotected my ears since aggravating them and causing a massive spike last summer.

Trying to slowly wean myself off double protecting in certain environments, but I suffer panic and a visceral reaction when I do so and get exposed to certain noise.

@Elfin I can feel your deep frustration and anger.
I face similar situation like yours too.
Our neighbor is doing home remodeling.
The sky constantly have airplanes hovering above.
I really can not relax in my own home !

May God have mercy on all the T sufferers like us !

thanks @robHing

Do you wear plugs in your house? So hard to get a balance between what is comfortable and then what is potentially damaging long term/creating a cycle of addiction and dependance

I try not to wear ear plugs or ear muffs 24/7.
I keep them around me if "situation" happen then I wear them.
I have hyperacusis too.
Based on the experts in TT forums, do not wear ear plugs in house if possible.
Let our ears desensitized by constantly exposed to normal sound is important.
