Cause of Tinnitus
Initially stress, but noise exposure made it worse
Hi all,

So, yesterday I was sitting outside at a public water fountain for about 1.5 hours. There were several fountains in a large complex.

I thought that is was a bit noisy, and it was a little difficult to hear people speaking about 3–4 meters away from me, but for people sitting next to me conversation was normal to hear.

I considered wearing plugs, but I'm trying not to over protect my ears against every noise. It didn't sound excessively loud, but it was like a wall of white noise which was quite dominant in the area. My phone app said it was about 67 dB more or less all the time.

Today both ears have spiked quite a lot due to this, and now I'm a bit worried I should have protected my ears. It was a long exposure of 1.5 hours. However I thought that with it being a water fountain and only 67 dB then I should be safe.

Here are the actual fountains(!):

I'm hoping that it will return to baseline soon, but I wanted to see what anyone thought about this?

What do you think?

Thanks as always,
R

Hopefully you will get better, and next time you will keep this experience in mind.

You were not under stress as a result of your noise exposure, so your story proves that the guidelines for healthy people shouldn't be used to determine whether or not certain noise is safe for people whose ears had already been compromised. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

If you were so afraid of the fountain noise that you even measured its ringing strength, then it may well be that you are subject to the phenomenon of self-fulfilling prophecy. And the change in tinnitus volume is just a random variation for no particular reason.
You should assume it'll be better soon.

Does it sounds like he was afraid/stressed out?

See, this is what non-reckless T sufferers do to ensure that there is nothing to worry about.

Hello !

Don't worry it will settle down in time !

I also have this kind of "Reactive Tinnitus" when I am in a public place, loud place or anything else for a few hours...

Actually, I always have earplugs in my pocket just in case it gets too bothering for my ears... ;)

But don't worry it will be alright !
