After exposure to a loud noise, many people get temporary tinnitus. Anyone know why this happens? What gets disturbed in the ear?

Most likely the auditory nerve fibers that connect to the hair cells are damaged (but not dead yet). The onset of tinnitus is a complex process, and although there are several theories, I don't think there is a complete agreed upon pathophysiological explanation.

Take it as a big warning sign. You can get temporary tinnitus and have already done permanent damage, noise induced damage to the auditory system is cumulative.
