I am male, 34 years old.
It all started at 13.30 on the 13th of April 2023. I had a mild cold and I had been practicing Wim Hof breathing for a week or so at this point. I have experience of Wim Hof from years ago when I used to do it daily for months on end.
I did Wim Hof breathing on the day when I had a slight cold, ironically the reason for me doing this breathing technique in the first place was to boost my immune system. When performing the Wim Hof breathing technique, there can be a bit of ringing in the ears during the final phase.
I did the breathing in the morning and by the afternoon I had a roaring/blaring ring in my right ear, a different one to which I experienced during the breathing technique itself. It is roughly 7000 Hz and sounds something like this 7000 Hz Test Tone but a little bit more fizzy. I panicked and immediately started calling doctors and specialists. One of my doctor friends is not an ENT but does something similar.
Nobody had any answers. On the 29th of April is when I started getting intense dizziness and vertigo. It turns out it was acute labyrinthitis. Confirmed by 3 GPs, an ENT and my doctor friend. That only lasted about 5-7 days. I am fully back to normal in regards to the dizziness and vertigo but still have the tinnitus,
My ENT does not think the Wim Hof breathing technique caused any of this but then he had also never heard of Wim Hof.
The first week or 2 was brutal as it was so new but then I habituated to it really well, I think, as I had mostly forgotten about it even though I could still hear it. But on the 25th of June my tinnitus pretty much doubled in volume for some reason, it just came on suddenly, I thought it was a smoke detector or something.
I have since mostly habituated to that increased volume now, I can still hear it but I just refuse to let it bother me. "Ha, that's just the sound of my ear" I say to myself, in a gaslight kind of way.
I live near a busy motorway which is loud enough for interrupting it enough and the funny thing was, right before all my tinnitus, I was about to spend £7k on new windows to reduce the sound of the motorway. Saved myself money there.
I completely removed caffeine from my diet on day one. I've had no artificial sweeteners since 25th of June. I have had a zero/super low intake of salicylate in my diet since 20th August. I meditate. My sleep is mostly undisturbed, I get 6.5 - 7.5 hours of sleep per night and a 10 - 60 minute nap almost every day. I am very fit and healthy, ex personal trainer and do some modeling. I am on Magnesium and vitamin D. No medications. Never exposed to loud sounds, I always have ear protection with me in loud environments, I have always done this.
Nothing really triggers my tinnitus, it's just kind of there all the time at the same volume. If the environment is loud enough or I am engrossed in something, I don't notice it. I can't hear it when I'm exercising or when I'm in the sauna even though the sauna is not loud at all, possibly a blood flow thing or something.
That's my tinnitus story.
