I have bilateral tinnitus. Each day, I record the level on a scale from one (low) to five (very loud). The sound level remains almost the same throughout the day, but at night, it changes. The level is often different in the morning.

Is there anything about sleep that could cause these changes? Overnight, the level can shift from low to loud or loud to low. Sometimes in the afternoon, if I take a nap, the level can also change—either increasing or decreasing. The sound level may stay the same for one or two days, but never longer. Then it changes again overnight.

Hey John! It seems we share the same extra turn of the screw. Mine's been like that for 10 years now. I've even woken up to total silence three times in the middle of the night, only to face absolute loudness in the morning.

It used to be bearable for months at a time, then spike for a couple of weeks. Anyway, it changes tone and volume almost daily — really hard to get habituated to.
