Waking Up with Tinnitus Gone, A Few Hours Later It Comes Back... Anybody Else?

Does anyone else experience waking up from a sleep and your tinnitus being gone?....
After a few hours it comes back....
I had this happen once (before my second acoustic trauma that had erased months of progress).

I think this means that you are on your way to a full recovery.

Yes many times. But it comes back as soon as i start walking. My T is somatic and Every momevent can influence my T. As soon as im going to lay down my T becomes very quiet or almost dissapears the last couple of days. During the day it has gotten louder. Its so hard to find the root cause of my T. My neck hurts alot though. :(

Carlyi, how do u know if you have somatic tinnitus?

Mine is worst in the morning then I don't know if it goes down through out the day or I just get awake enough to deal with it. I would consider it a good thing that it goes though.

I have a similiar experience, but I'd like to add that it's at its worst when I wake up in the middle of a "cycle". When I stay a bit longer in bed than it's almost gone.

I would love for that to happen, unfortunately that has never happened. I wish you the best!

I agree with Bill, I see some of your posts and it looks like healing to me.

What I would do to awake in silence (probably stay in bed all day). But I understand it must be very fustrating when the T starts up again during the day. Still I'd see this as something positive if I were you.;)

nearly 4 months in and this month %50 of my mornings have been like this.

If this is an improvement, I truly don't understand the connection if thats a brain issue. Neurons getting hyperexcited during the day then settling in the morning?

It would make sense if it was just about the healing process of ears maybe.

Tinnitus comes in many forms and intensities and no two people experience it the same. My tinnitus is variable from: complete silence, mild, moderate or severe. I can go to bed and it's silent, wake up during the night and it's severe by the morning it can be mild. There is no definate pattern to it.

If I may ask Michael, I have read your topics but do not recall about you hearing complete silence for some (hopefully not scarse) moments, when did you get these moments and how long do they last? I'm just curious.

JoyBenz and Melike do seem to have a pattern though and it's not easy to say if it is a step into full recovery. But if it did not happen at the onset I'd take that as some sort of recovery.

Hi @Applejuice
I have mentioned the lenght of time my tinnitus is silent in previous posts but it was some time ago. In 2008 when I had my 2nd noise trauma, it was after about 8 months into TRT my tinnitus started to vary in intensity. I welcomed this as it was severe most of the time. It started to fluctuate from complete silence which would last for a day sometimes two. Then it would return to mild, moderate, severe or extremely severe. It took 4 years for me to fully habituate.

My tinnitus still varies considerably so no two days are always the same. When it is silent it can last for up to 3 days but usually it's for 2 days. After this period it will usually progress to mild or moderate. It can last between 1 or 3 days like this then suddenly, it will reach severe level that can typically last for up to 2 days. Any longer and I have to take clonazepam. Today for instance it's quite variable from silence to mild and moderate changing frequently but doesn't bother me in the slightest as I'v habituated. I'm not even wearing my white noise generators today. I'm using my tablet to write this post instead of my regular PC and the tinnitus is completely silent at the moment.

Hope this helps.
Michael

Ok good to hear you have some quiet from time to time. Must be awesome. Do you think it was due to TRT or just time?

I have had TRT twice and both times was the full treatment. This included regualar counselling sessions with a Hearing Therapist and wearing white noise generators for 10hrs a day and using a sound machine at night. Each treatment lasted 2 years. The first time was 1996 to 98. The tinnitus had reduced to a very low level and my Hyperacusis which was very severe was completely cured.

In 2008 I suffered the 2nd noise trauma fortuntely the hyperacusis did not return and is still cured. The tinnitus was unbelieveably severe and I believe TRT helped a lot but the tinnitus hasn't reduced to what it was prior to 2008. However, I'm thankful that it no longer reaches extreme severe levels that would last for many days and was almost unbearable. I explain all this in my post: My experience with tinnitus. You can read the post in my "started treads" if you wish. It took 4 years to habituate. According to my ENT consultant, whose an Audiovestibular physician, I was the 2nd worst tinnitus patient she had ever met. I asked her to be candid about my condtion as I was getting rather depressed back in 2010, when I noticed I wasn't making anymore improvement. My doctor said she would never give up on treating me and she kept her word. We have a good rapport and can't thank her enough for her help. It was then she prescribed me clonazepam and It helped immensely. I was warned about it's addictive nature and advised not to take it too often.

I am a believer in TRT and wish that everyone were able to get this treatment but it can be very expensive. I didn't have to pay for it as it's free here in the UK. It isn't available in every hospital though due I believe to the expense.

My ENT believes this is definitely a step for full recovery and the number of quiet days will increase week by week until I reach the total silence. But he said it can take up to 30 months. I said a mild one would be enough for me, but he insisted and said 'no it will be totally gone'. Oh how I wish that.

You are very fortunate to have found a knowledgeable ENT.

Yes, I agree, I am. He is the only one interested in helping people with this ailment in my country. Carefully follows the new literature, drugs and treatments, attends the conferences. He and his team even found a few T causes that have never been identified before and published their papers in the Tinnitus Conference in May. He is a bit expensive tho :/

The next time you see him, please ask him whether that 30 months figure is applicable to all T sufferers, or only to people who got their T as a result of stress, like you.

He will probably tell me that we have to get an fMRI and see the damaged area to draw a conclusion. If it is just a neuronal reorganization, he believes it can be rewired given some time and certain treatmenta. Not that confident if it has something to do with inner ear damage. But of course, he knows that I already got 10 rTMS sessions and have been using the supplements he prescribed for a while, so he keeps that in mind when he does that 30 month assumption.

What supplements did he prescribe, if you don't mind me asking?

Nothing fancy actually. One of them contains bioflavonoids, vitamin C, calcium, niacin, vit b5-b2-b6-b1-b12. The other one magnesium, ginkgo, zinc, b3-6-1-2-12 and ginseng. Both of them are produced in Turkey.

May I ask you to ask him whether it is a good idea to protect one's ears from moderate noises like that of a vacuum cleaner or a blender until the time T is gone?

Oh of course he thinks that much is over protecting. He thinks that I should live myself the way I do pre T, no changes( apart from the amount of stress). Just carry a couple of foam earplugs if it is going to be louder than 90 db. He was ok with earphones too unless of course you don't blast your ears.

But if those sounds make you feel uncomfortable, maybe you should protect at first and give yourself time to get used to them slowly. I don't have any hyperacusis ( although I show signs of TTTS from time to time), so that question may have different answers for each of us.
