Hey guys. I went in for my brain MRI yesterday. Been having tons of issues. I was diagnosed with Meniere's a couple of years back, but things have gotten worse, so my neurologist suggested on the safe side to do a brain MRI.

Anyway, I asked for something to calm me down before going. He prescribed just 1 mg of Xanax.

Within an hour the ringing stopped, the hyperacusis was gone, and ears were opened up.

This is after four weeks of straight Hell. I slept better last night that I have in months. I woke up this morning to silence once again.

I remember in the early stages going to my Meniere's specialist and he put me on Xanax but I never got it filled.

I am going to call my neurologist today and explain what happened and see if he could put me on a small dose on a regular basis/or whenever needed.

Has anyone had any experience with it, if so, whatcha think?

It hasn't come back yet? I'm thrilled for you if it works!

I took a Xanax one night early on. It made my tinnitus quieter and I fell asleep relieved, but once it wore off, I woke in the middle of the night to it raging loud. In retrospect, I'm not sure if it was louder than normal or if it was just such a shock to have it back after some quiet.

Fingers crossed for you, really hope it works!

Good luck, and keep us posted! I tried 1/4 of a .25 mg yesterday evening, which is comically low, but I wanted to see if it would have any sort of effect. The T did go down a tiny bit, but it probably was just coincidence.

I'm really interested in hearing how long your T stays down. and whether it comes back raging and worse than before (kind of like @Tinker Bell mentioned) or whether it just stays down.

Xanax doesn't help tinnitus overall. It makes it worse when you consider the tinnitus getting off it. When you take Xanax the effect of GABA is increased which causes the body to compensate by increasing glutamate over time to counter the effect. After 6+ weeks tolerance starts to build up and eventually the Xanax will have almost no effect. This is why Xanax is usually only prescribed for short term use.

Since you'll only be able to use it for a short amount of time you'll need to get off. Guess what happens when you get off? There is too much glutamate to GABA which may permanently damage sensorineural tissues by allowing too much free radical calcium in the nerve cells. Tapering off helps but there are still reports of people without tinnitus getting permanent tinnitus when going off Xanax. Also huge spikes that last for months/permanently going off Xanax.
