I’m in a habit of having my earmuffs on almost 24/7 to be safe in case of any random/unexpected noise exposures

How much louder is your T with muffs? I’m not a doctor but over protection is not good for you. I think you have a good chance of recovery. 24/7 may not be a good idea inside the house.

My tinnitus ALWAYS spikes/gets louder after putting in qtips, but if I don’t then my ears stay uncomfortably itchy

I’ve been taking advice I read here about “it’s impossible to overprotect” and it seems like my sound sensitivity is becoming 100x worse

Both audiologist I spoke with warned me to not over protect or sound sensitivity would become terrible. Only to do so when sound would be damaging to others... like the mower

You have to understand how tinnitus and hyperacusis works in order to understand why the brain does what it does. In short, your brain needs to be exposed daily to everyday noises in order to reassure itself that sound is safe and not hurtful.

Best is to just stay inside but I find a toque helps or put your hood up if you have a hoodie. Cover the outside of your ears.

Does overprotecting make you more susceptible to spikes when you are exposed to noise? It seems like the more I protect the easier I spike

That's how understand it. Your auditory system loses resilience to sound, so you become more sensitive to it.

Yes, pls ignore ajc's comment above; I'm not sure why, but he seems to like to make these types of provocative comments that lack in empathy. Hard to understand, especially since he used to be severely suicidal himself.

I & many others here completely understand where you're coming from ❤️

Pls remember that although things feel very final right now, they very well could change for the better for you - even drastically so. So although there may be no quality of life now, this could very well change in the future. And suicide will always remain an option... no one can ever take that away from you. Idk why, but knowing that last bit helps me keep going.

@4Grace I think I’m fucked mainly because of the fact that I’ve had very faint tinnitus and visual snow all of my life for as long as I can remember even since I was a toddler, and that my tinnitus was triggered so young (15 and 18) despite not even being around much loud noise. Signs that I was destined to get it and have some neurochemistry and genetic predispositions to it

Can you listen to the same type of music on other speakers? I don't have a very good tolerance to distorted guitars and brass instruments so I mainly listen to hip hop now, and sprinkle some rock and grunge here and there. Absolutely cannot listen to metal or hardcore at any volume.

I would like to repeat that I once thought that these type spikes were imaginary. Not possible. My left ear is extremely sensitive. Even if I have zero emotional reaction to a sound yes almost any sound now spikes me. Unless it happens to you, you will never know. My T is loud and getting louder from everyday sounds. I need for it to go down once. Every AM I say this is the day.

If you have the cash, head over to the Vitamin Shoppe and pick up some NaC, Magnesium Threonate and Vitamins A, C, and E.

There's a couple studies that it can help mitigate excitotoxity from acoustic trauma. No guarantees, but if you have money to burn, it's worth a shot.
