I'm so happy I got to travel when I did. And yes, Australia was amazing. Altogether I spent close to three years there. Now, I'm lucky when I get to visit my dad on Sundays :) Hey, I remember the jellyfish from when my mum took me to the coast as a kid. I didn't know what they were back then and used them to decorate my sand castles :)
Christiaan
Playing with jellyfish? That's a heck of a story. You must be the Steve Irwin of Germany;)

Nice to hear that you still have family in the neighbourhood. It seems your dad is a very busy man. A well to do businessman perhaps;p
Leila
The Steve Irwin of Germany? Love it :) But I wouldn't go so far, we just carried those wobbly things around on a couple of sticks and filled our castle ditches with them to simulate water. Gah, the beautifully twisted minds of young children :)
As for dad, he's a retiree who loves to make me go on 2-hour walks with him when all I was planning on doing was having a cup of coffee and a chat with him :)
Leila
Your parents can't be too far away, either, since you get to dog-sit every once in a while, right?
Christiaan
Wow, just the thought of using jelly fish for filling up ditches. It gave me a good laugh.I remember when I was playing on the beach as a young kid, that my mother always warned me to stay away from jelly fish. You could imagine that I had quite a protective childhood:)

Your dad sounds quite fit for his age. It's good to have a dad who keeps you fit and sharp as well.It almost sounds like he's your personal trainer!
Christiaan
I'm lucky to also have a dad who keeps his mind sharp. Mind you, he's 81 but it doesn't stop him from cycling 15 km a day plus that he's always busy tweaking electronical devices (like repairing radios, setting up alarm systems, etc.)
Christiaan
That's right! It's certainly not a burden for me to dog-sit Judy plus my parents live 20 minutes from where I am, so it's pretty doable.
Lurius
Funny, my dad is 82. Even more stuff we have in common.
Leila
I can only hope to be as fit as my dad when I get to his age! Like your dad he exercises pretty much every day and takes care of his garden from March to November. I'm grateful he's doing so well for his age and hope it is going to stay this way for a long time :)
Did you get to enjoy a bit of the beautiful sunshine we had today?
Christiaan

Hi @Leila , I hear a lot of stories of people staying fit in their 80s / 90s when they occasionally tend their own garden. Nature is basically our fountain of youth;) At least you have a lot of room for gardens in Germany. Here, every city is basically a concrete jungle and one should be very lucky to even own a house nowadays. Perhaps I'll move to Germany some day. Do you live in a nice city by the way?
Christiaan
Oh, yes. The weather was quite nice the last two days. Very warm and lots of people who went to the beach. How about you?
Leila
You are right, there are quite a few green spots in Germany. Some of our major cities even. Unfortunately, there are just as many cities that are all concrete.
I live close to a city that was bombed rather badly during WWII and got rebuilt too quickly to look pretty. There are a couple of pre-war houses left and they give you an idea of how nice the place must have been before a big part of it got destroyed.
Leila
I'd love to spend a day on the beach but I'm too far away for that :( That's the nice thing about the Netherlands, there's water everywhere.
Christiaan
Hi there Leila, sorry to hear about your city being devastated during WW2. It's such a shame that it had to be rebuilt quickly. A city often loses it's unique character by doing so.
Christiaan
Judging from old photos of cities like Königsberg, I must say that old German architecture is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Luckily you still have a few cities like Dresden where they do care about architectural history.
Christiaan
Well, If you spend almost your entire life in a flat & wet country like the Netherlands, you'd almost long for mountains:) But it's certainly cool to live near the sea and go for a swim every now and then
Leila
You are totally right, Dresden and most of the former East German cities are absolutely beautiful. It's a shame that everything needs to cost efficient today, because it also means that everything pretty much looks the same. I've always liked to travel "die neuen Bundesländer". We used to have friends there, when I was a kid and it is amazing to see how things have changed.
Leila
As for the Netherlands being flat and wet, well everything has its pros and cons. But I know what you mean. I may curse the hill around here when I'm out and about but walking / cycling when there is tailwind is probably just as bad. Wie war das noch mal? Das Gras ist immer grüner auf der anderen Seite :)
Lurius
Norway is full of mountains and forests, but just as wet xD And three times as cold.
