  • Hey! Reading your posts and I agree about the link between anxiety, PTSD and pain. Can I just check what level of pain you experienced?
    CJCP
After my acoustic trauma I had an extremely inflamed middle ear - an urgent care doc and an ENT both confirmed this. However, I'd argue that the worst of my pain came around 2-3 months after the incident, and after my ENT confirmed the inflammation had gone down. The pain would cause me migraines and would not stop, but I wouldn't call it the worst pain I ever had - just really consistent and reactive to sound.

@CJCP sorry if you already covered this, but during your therapy did you focus on the pain / ear element? Or did you work on your trauma and that naturally helped with the pain? I'm starting therapy next week (long overdue) but my therapist isn't specifically trained in the link between chronic pain and mental health issues

I worked on the trauma and that naturally helped with the pain. There are studies that show a link between tinnitus and memory, and when you are working on processing trauma you are directly working with memory. Of course I worked on processing the memory of my acoustic trauma, but it was actually the processing of the more traumatic events of my life that helped dissipate the hyperacusis pain and feeling of fullness
Hi CJCP! Your posts have been a great source of comfort to me. I also have H&T - getting close to the 6-month mark. I have found weaning off earplugs very helpful, but can't seem to avoid pushing myself too much and getting setbacks. Did you find your time to recovery from setbacks to decrease or increase with time? Thanks!
    CJCP
I realized my setbacks directly correlated with my expected severity during the initial sensory instance. I assume most of us experienced a single episode of intense auditory sensory input which was either simultaneously and/or cumulatively supplemented with high levels of immediate and/or chronic emotional distress. The intense memory of auditory pain is instinctively threatening, so resolving this fear is crucial.
Hey CJCP, I was wondering how you were doing these days? I'm still stuck in this rollercoaster of fluctuating H and ear pain and could use a positive story to stay inspired and optimistic.

This is still a rollercoaster of an injury to deal with - I have fluctuating H and ear pain as well. I just passed the 5-month mark from my noise incident and everything overall is continuing to get better, albeit at a snail's pace. I can't stress enough how meditation and mindfulness have helped me so much with my anxiety and emotional state. Simply put, this injury takes a lot of time and mental work to deal with.

I am determined to get my life back and see no reason why I shouldn't continue to improve. Setbacks and anxiety attacks are sadly part of the game for me, and while they may knock me over I won't let them keep me down. @CRGC

@CJCP tell me about it...I'm around the same timeline as you and the (slight) ups and (heavy) downs are so difficult to deal with still. Doing everything I can to keep going, therapy, mindfulness, but not seeing much results on my mental state yet. Good luck with everything, wishing you the best
4 month mark! 45 mins/day of meditation + magnesium glycinate supplements help. Fullness/TTTS still there but definitely (slowly) improving.

@Mi1 Much better! I'm convinced this is actually just central sensitization, so I'm treating this as such. I've focused on managing my anxiety disorder by way of therapy and through emotional processing of previous traumas throughout life. Pain is an emotional experience. I am not out of the woods yet, but I am able to tolerate almost all noise now. My brain isn't interpreting neuropathic messages as pain anymore.

Hi! My ears were good for a month and now im having the tensed feeling in my ears again.. :-(
Just finished my second set of steroids - all it did was cause migraines and pain. Really hope that didn't screw up my path to recovery.
