Spike in left ear so the doctor wanted it, also my first ENT appointment is in May so he said he'd probably want to me to have one anyway so might as well get it done.

I had my MRI Saturday morning, wore foam ear plugs & headphones. No worsening of my noise induced tinnitus, which I was expecting from some of the posts I read here. Might be of some reassurance to people who might be nervous about it. Expecting my results this week, although can't imagine there...

Yeah I'm the same, hear it above most things including driving, watching television etc. Shower is also the only thing that masks it... and playing with the band, except between songs due to the moulded ear plugs so I can hear just my brain noise in that few secs until the next song kicks in.

How severe is yours out of curiosity? Can you play music through speakers at low volume?

My wife. My kids. My guitar. My band. My hobbies. Most of all my brain... It's powerful and it's what is manifesting our lovely noise, so I try to train it to make the noise secondary to everything else. Sounds mad, but I say things in my head that nullify it like "noise is there but it's ok...

Bill does that a lot, he's part of the "told you so" brigade of spreading doom & gloom with a dash of no hope.

I haven't bothered finding out the frequency of my tinnitus, but in my left ear it's very high pitched like a faulty light fitting, tone in the center of my head is a bit lower, my right ear is lower again... all tonal, no hissing.

First of all congrats... secondly if us guys had to deal with pregnancy and tinnitus... I think the world would end :ROFL:. Hopefully yours won't get worse... try keeping away from this forum and Google if you can ;)

This is it... some people can park tinnitus, or accept it as part of who they are. Others can't unfortunately. There might be a reaction to this along the lines of "but you probably don't have severe tinnitus", "mine is worse than yours". Well I say how do you know? I might just be coping...

Have an appointment with my ENT in May... this post has put me off it. Especially knowing the cause... Noise-induced tinnitus.

Ah Gary Baus, great player who used to play with us! And yes, everybody is different, and everyone copes in different ways... hoping I can too and it continues this way. Thanks for replying!

Yes - when I say I've made changes, I meant it haha. Important to note that those venues weren't very big so I didn't need to fill the room, I depend on the sound engineer to crank it FOH. I heard myself just enough and also feel and know what I'm playing. Will be interesting to see what it's...

Thank you @Earing I know you mean well, I have the RS PRO RS-95 and on my side of the stage with drums at opposite end it measured 93 dB. I have keys player next to me but she uses in ears so I hear none of that.

Here we go again. Right. I got tinnitus because I wasn't wearing ear plugs when I played in metal bands, and through to playing in cover bands... and only started wearing €20 ear plugs in the last 5 years but they would loosen in the ear etc. These custom ones don't (I don't care what you say...

Nope... Not for everyone at least. My Dad is an example, my many friends who have continued in spite of tinnitus, and it not getting worse will say otherwise. And some of them are playing 30+ years.

That should read "My opinion is it MIGHT get worse" It's all just "What ifs" isn't it... Look at Chris Martin - had tinnitus for 10 years... started wearing custom moulds (I know I know!!) and he says it hasn't gotten worse since. Optimism from people like that and countless others...

Thanks @Flamingo1, appreciate that. Believe me, if I get so much as a spike, or a feeling on stage of it getting worse, I'll walk off no problem and never grace the stage again. Yes, I have plenty of other things I like to do besides music. I coach underage rugby, play flight simulator, jogging...

@ajc This is an absolutely insane thing to mention on a forum where people might be vulnerable. Comparing basejumping to playing in a f*cking band. You don't know me. It's almost like you hope I get to that stage so that you can say "ha, told ya so".

Bottom line with me is; I'm willing to take that chance because the band/our music is too important to me. IF I feel an increase I WILL STOP. I have a strong mental barrier over my tinnitus at the moment, which is moderate to severe. I can sleep with it raging, i find the noise soothing...

That is interesting @hans799, good thing I'm not on an aircraft carrier lol. Measuring our last gig, the onstage volume reached a max of 93 dB so I'm hoping with my moulded ear plugs with -25 dB reduction will keep me going.

I respect that information @Michael Leigh, thanks. I'm hoping my new awareness and steps I've taken when playing will hold strong, if not, and I feel any slight adjustment in level, I'm smart enough to stop. I have 3 kids who would all prefer a Dad who's focused on them rather than the sounds...

You're doing the right thing so far, well done... you're so young so I think it will get better. If you're going to concerts... I would suggest wearing ear plugs with attenuation (filters)... or better still custom moulded plugs :)

Thank you @Jazzer, I'm also Dave by the way :). I'm hoping the way things are going positively for me at the moment that my tinnitus will not get worse. I play in a ska band, and there was always a sax, a trumpet and a trombone behind me... needless to say we've changed the stage layout now...

For any musicians who don't have custom moulded ear plugs with attenuation filters. Get them now. €200 well spent. They completely block out the harsh frequencies of cymbals and snare drums. Here's a picture of mine...

Michael has posted this same thing numerous times. With no real proof, and it's really subjective. Dismissing professional ear plugs without probably being in that environment himself. Like I've said, I've used the shitty foam plugs, crappy standard musicians plugs for years and that's what did...

Your understanding is wrong. Custom moulded ear plugs cover the entire cavity and outer ear, I have the -25 dB at the moment but can upgrade to 30 if needs be. Your picture was amusing by the way. And yes I attend more gigs, with my custom moulds, and I f*cking love every minute of it. It...

OK Bill. I feel genuinely sorry for people who have it that bad. Or can't cope with it. But I can at the moment, and my tinnitus is loud, intrusive, unbearable... when I let it. I have three different tones going constantly if I focus on it.

Isn't it funny? A post meant as a positive story for other musicians was met with "you'll regret it", "you might get suicidal, and we'll be able to tell you we told you so", and quotes from other posts with movie trailer type oneliners "until one say, it wasn't". I want to know with musicians...

Thanks... and yes I'm super cautious, but not giving up the thing I love to do most, so easily. There's loads of musicians who have continued after onset of tinnitus, Chris Martin of Coldplay for example... Lars Ulrich of Metallica. I get optimistic from people like that.

I've been musician and producer since 17. I NEVER had any issues with hearing. I worked in a steal mill and had pipe banging near my head for 5 years, nothing damaged my hearing. In fact my hearing is in the top 1% for my age. Yet here I am. Are you sure it's not noise induced over time...

You're 17, you'll be fine :), that's what you need to be telling yourself. Sounds like the tinnitus is also spiking because of an underlying issue going by what you were saying regarding earaches etc. My tinnitus is noise induced from lots of years playing in loud bands with no earplugs, back...

My left ear has spiked since Saturday, very loud... but it has developed this feedback whistling sound whenever someone speaks for every word... and I can really hear it when I whistle, like this high pitched feedback tone. Anybody else get this? hoping that this spike isn't permanent either...

Hard to say how loud, between 1 & 10 I would have given it a 4...now it's around 7. I wouldn't have been too sensitive to sounds besides being out in the pub maybe & my drummers snare drum!! I think for now, moulded ear plugs are the way to go for me. With IEMs I've heard mixed reviews...but...
